My vote would be to get the muffler out of there. It is unbelievable to me that it is mounted inside the engine compartment.

You, of course, will be taking tons of pictures of this mod.

Interesting about the door. I have not done anything to mine yet. Why I find that interesting is that on my PT, there is a gasket around one of the oil lines on the right hand side (facing engine) that does not seal for a hill of beans, and also there are two serious air gaps around the #1 and #4 injectors. Meant to shove some Aluminum foil in there to see if I could block some of that air up...

Intrigued on your exhaust thoughts. I am tired of how loud it is, and am thinking of adding a second muffler (like off a motor bike) heading back then out just up higher...

But, I have to finish tracking my oil leaks. There are so many still...

Tim,
The muffler being mounted inside the engine cover has it's advantages. I do a lot of work in brush and woods. An external exhaust would be getting hung up and probably damaged all the time. Also , if you mounted the muffler out side the cover, I think you would want some kind of heat shield for protection from burns caused by coming in contact with it.

Looks like its gonna work. So far, its running 10 degrees cooler, I bought the next siz bigger cooler, to sandwich them together, another 10 degrees, and we're there!.

AVL,

Glad to hear that. I hope the love/hate relationship starts leaning more to the love side ;)

I think I saw your pickup a week or so ago when I was working at the corner of 696 & 699. It was a white Ford with a yellow logo.

Dear AVL,

Just a thought, but have you checked to see if your thermostat is working correctly? If not, it might be might be diverting oil from your internal oil cooler.

Looking at the oil flow diagrams, it looks as if there are a couple of oil diversion ports on the engine block, behind, and to the left of, the oil filter. These are for the oil heater, but it occurred to me that you could use them for cooling as well.

All the best,

Peter

Dear AltavistaLawn,

In digging around to answer a question of Carl's, I noticed that Deutz does have a setup for an outboard (off engine) oil cooler setup, instead of the existing onboard version. I don't know how big it is, or even if they just provide the hookup hardware, but I was wondering about an old ford oil cooler, plus some screw in tubing, and you could totally relocate the cooler to a very large oil cooler, with a screen that would keep the chaff from plugging it over the course of a day.

Just a thought,

Peter
