Opinion on Jeffords switch

/ Opinion on Jeffords switch #51
I used to be a democrat and even ran one of the famous cacuses in Iowa, I even voted for Clinton the forst time. But it didn't take long for the scum to rise to the top. The demos no longer represent people but off the wall groups and socialists. If Jeffords had any "Balls" he would have switched to the democrats, but he did not, why? I beleive that he did not for he is still selling his soul to the biggest bidder. If he thinks the Reps. were mean, I read in the paper this morning that The democrat from Montana who made agreements in the tax bill, when he got to the demo cacus, members turned their back on him, wait till Jeffords uses his "independance" and the demos turn on him, he went from the pan to the fire.

A Zealot, I think not, a concerned citizen, yes.

Too much name calling and not enough thinking.
Soul selling? Come on! You're talking about a guy who probably won't run for another term as senator, but is aware that if he does, that he will do so without the support of either the Democrats or the GOP.

Because of his move, Vermont, our tiny little state with only a 6 figure population, now has not one, but TWO committee chairs. I don't believe that's ever happened before. If politics were poker, then Jeffords just pulled four aces on a president and political party that bet the house on a pair of threes. (OK, so they bet the senate, not the house. But they knew the bet.)

Remember, this isn't personal, and it's not a team sport. It's politics. We "hired" our guy to do a job for Vermont, not for the Republican party.
Is he doing his job? Apparently better than anyone though possible.

Todd & Pete,

I agree with you guys totally. I'm a registered Independent, because I don't really believe the 2-party system is serving us well lately. I also think that Jeffords has been Rep. for something like 30 years? At any rate, he's made a lot of friends and alliances in the Rep. party over the years, and there is probably as much pain as gain involved in this switch (especially judging by some of the venom-filled responses I've been reading here). Sure, he got a couple of chair seats, sure he probably brokered some bennies. That surely is politics IMO.

Seems like this was a good time to do this. Dubya has been giving lip service to many mid-left issues lately without actually fullfilling any. I think gridlock is good. Clinton did remarkably well with his agenda considering he has a split congress, let's see if Dubya can do as well.

I'm a long way from the beautiful state of Vermont but I couldn't agree with Hess, Boondox and Toddler more. It's refreshing to see a politician putting the interests of his people over his party. I wish Jim Jeffords would come to Mississippi and run against Trent Lott - I would vote for him in a heartbeat.

Now this is funny. Is it true that our guy may become a trendsetter? Given that the majority's already switched, I guess anyone who was borderline can now jump off the GOP wagon without taking the blame for a Democratic coup de tat.
If it happens, I'll find out here since the only tv I'm going to be watching is going to the Stanley Cup Finals! (Go Devils) Thought I caught something during a commercial last night re. McCain.

I've been hearing some rumors about McCain too, but it will surprise me if he makes the switch. This would be a good time for a Dem that is leaning to swing the balance back the other way too. I'm sure the R's would sweeten the pot considerably to get the power back. 2001 might be a very interesting year.

I heard that rumor too, but I don't believe for a second that McCain would jump ship. He stands to get a sweet spot in the Rep. ranks because Dubya is a lame duck.
