pic is of a 64 4 cyl gasser red tiger ( 4000 thus a 172 ).

I'm guessing I have stuck valves.

found 2 bent push rods,a nd one kicked over to the side.. so I'm guessing 3 valves had issues of sticking.

have not puleld vcover to look at vtrain. ran out of time.

what are my chances of not having bent valves too.

I know.. I know.. no xray vision here either.. :)

as soon as I get Ime I'll start pulling tin and the tank and then the vc and tak a peak inside.

kicker is I drove this think just a few weeks ago to do some balding.

parked her like normal.. went to start and clink-clink :(

always something
probably mad at that IH I just picked up.. :) that and this junky gas they sell now probbaly glued some intakes open... GRRRRRR :(

Why would you think the valves were bent? Is that engine an interference engine (i.e. one where the valves can interfere with the piston)?

I'll stick my neck out and venture an opinion. By the looks of those pushrods, the valves were stuck tight and most likely didn't move at all. I had two or three bent on my Ferguson when I first got it but they were not nearly as bad as those that you have. I had to roll them on a flatsurface to see that they were bent. In fact I gotta' say those two are the worst I've have ever seen!

just thinking pout loud.

I don't know if it is an interference engine or not.

I just hink them valves would have to have been stuck darn tight to bend the rods like that.. and it's not like it hasn't been running recently...

i also wondered about valve timing.. but I see the timing gear is keyed to the cam, and my hyds are still working.. so cam is turning fine..

dunno.. thinking out loud..

Did the engine backfire recently or in the past? A backfire causes a lot of pressure on the intake valve that is open and can cause the rods to bend. If it happens repeatedly, it can result in what you see. Also over time the slight damage to the push rods will begin to grow. If they are not perfectly straight, they will eventually bend from the repeated column loading that they see in overcoming the valve spring forces. Once the bend is large enough, it will only take a small amount of excess pressure to bend them like a pretzel.

One other thing. Are the lifter solid or hydraulic. I would assume solid and in that case have the valves been adjusted? As the cam, lifters and other valve train components wear, the increased gap in the system will allow the rods to drift out of alignment and result in a slight side load as well as a hammering affect. This can also result in push rod, valve, or cam damage.

The proof will be in what you find when you get the top half exposed. If none of the valves are damaged or stuck, it may have been one of the other causal factors.

havn't noticed any backfires.

solid lifters.

I havn't adjusted the valves , I got it 2ys ago.. it ran so good ..... not an excuse I know...

right now I'm hoping for sticky valves and bent push rods and some gaskets and a lil work taking the hood off..

more info.

a buddy emailed me the valve assignments.

if I read it correctly, intake push rods 2 & 3 are bent bad, and intake for 4 was kicked off the lifter and is liekly bent.

if no valves are bent I'll be a happy camper.

I assume the valve just stuck / seized, rocker couldn't move, and the push rod just bowed out ont he 2 bent ones, and kicked off the lifter on the 3rd...

at least it's OHV and not OHC.. I can pull the tin and gas tank and rad and water pump and fan and head and not really worry about timing... makes it a lil easier anyway.. :)

I'm not a mechanic, but hafta ask. what makes you think the valves might have survived? shorter than the pushrod stems so less liekly to bend? closer to valve guide? etc?

soundguy

Push rods are engine fuses.

It seems kind of strange that 3 intake valves stuck after shutting the tractor off. I would think that on a tractor of that age that the guides would be so loose that you would be using oil. I would take a pry bar and try to open each valve to see if they are stuck. Is there any chance that when you tried to start it it kicked back and tried to run backwards. Just throwing out ideas.
