Opinions on High Mileage Oil

I worked 31 years in the lube oil industry and have no idea what these things have or don't have vs. "normal" oils. They were unheard of when I was working.

Good point on PCV.

One thing HM oils have is higher levels of seal conditioners and swellers. Basically a Lite version of the concentrated stuff you can buy from Lucas. Can help with older seals that are still intact.

Can be a warranty issue with HM oils, if you must have an SN rated oil. Ones I've seen are SL rated, which shouldn't be a problem for Sid.

And I think that is the only major difference. A little more detergent in some cases and elastomers for seals in those HM oils. Not a bad idea, but not sure it is necessary for many applications.

I have an old K3500 dump truck that was probably neglected by the previous owner. When I went to Advance Auto and they gave me a lesson on oil. I told them that my oil pressure was low when the engine warmed up thus showing the check engine light. They recommend that I use 15W-40 diesel oil in the engine. They said that the EPA forced the oil manufacturers to come up with a less polluting oil with less zinc and phosphorus. My old truck's engine was not designed for the new oils. The HM oils still have the zinc and phosphorus but is more heavily taxed so they cost more. I do not use the truck much, but have been using the diesel oil with no problems and no low oil pressure.

High Mileage oil = snake oil, oil companies are trying to fool consumers into paying more for a product than necessary, under the guise of doing no harm and some *potential* good.

Do not be fooled, regular oil changes with a quality product is ALL you need to do...... ever.

I agree with ModMech. I've converted quite a few engines with lots of miles/hours to synthetic with no problems. On my old Gravely, it actually quit using oil.

You don't need that HM stuff.

That is why I use Schaeffer oil in a lot of my stuff. Good levels of Moly and Zinc. It is true, that ZDDP was a problem for diesel particulate filters and such on the newer diesels and had to be lowered in CJ-4. The 5w30 synthetic I use in my pickup is LOADED with moly. 4 times any other brand on the shelf. Moly has not been shown to be a detriment to diesel particulate filters like zinc has.

Good articles on why Moly is a good thing in a motor, especially an older one. 3 articles, so after you read this one you have more on right side menu. The second article really lays it all out on why this is a good thing.

You don't have to be a Dealer to use the product... I have no idea what is meant by "regular oil change " Never knew there was such .

I would guess "regular" oil changes would be based on hours, miles, or annual.
