$750 for an item that is two years old, is subject to rough use and costs $850 new is too much unless there is a big shortage of mowers in your area. $675 was a good offer especially sight unseen.

I recently responded to a Craigslist ad for a used KK 5ft rough cut mower. The seller was asking $750 for a 2 year old cutter. He's about a hour away so I asked him a few questions about it including if he could send a couple of PICs of the cutter before I traveled to see and buy it. I asked in 2 separate EMAIL's and received no PICs but he always responded to me but sent no PICs. I'm very familiar with the KK cutter and I can purchase new for $845 + tax at my local TSC store. I know the KK brand is an economy line but my use would be 3-4 times a year on about 5acres of flat over grown weeds/brush. I don't need a high end cutter so I figured I'd save a few hundred and buy used. My last EMAIL to him I offered $675 for the cutter and this would be contingent of the condition. His repsonse was defensive and I got the feeling he was insulted with the offer. Do you think my offer of $675 was too low? Needless to say I responded politely and bowed out of pursuing his cutter.

dfeck - You did everything right. Your concerns are valid but you have no choice on how other people will choose to react.

Some posters say that they will not pay more than 50% of new for used. In my experience as a scavanger, one can find that percentage quite easily, but the condition of the item may not be just like new. Numbers increase the odds. If you look at 3 mowers you may find one that is acceptably priced. If you look at 30 mowers, chances are you will find a better deal.

The used brush hogs that I find where I live tend to be used hard. For some reason folks think that the big heavy brush cutter will consume all in its path, fom weeds to 6ft tall trees. I looked at one machine that had part of a car mirror wrapped around the spindle. I may not hesitate to run over the mole hill in my fine powder clay with one, but I would never advocate using one for auto demolition.

For an item that you will only use a little, you should not pay a lot. No more than 50% of new for a unit that will perform the task it is needed for. Will a 7 year old cutter in a reasonable used condition work for you?

Ebay and Craigs List are very neat things for both sellers and buyers, IF you have the time and patience to "weed out" the silliness. Good luck.
