Opinons on WIX filters.

I just got off the phone with Purolator (the part that does automotive filters). I'll quote the gentleman I talked to, "Fram make Purolator? No sir, Fram and Purolator have been bitter competitors for 70 years."

He went on to say they make the filter media in N.C. and assemble the filters themselves in plants around the world.

The last I heard, Fram was a division of Allied Signal. Purolator filters are made by the Purolator Filter Company.

AC is made by Champion Labs. Bargain basements like SuperTech (Wally World Brand) to K&N are manufactured by Champion.

The general concensus on BITOG seems to be favorable. Wix also seems to be a favorable brand.

I lost an engine because of a Pennzoil Filter. They did not stand behind it either. I sent the filter after the mechanic showed me what it done and Pennzoil did not concur. As I figured they would not. This happened in 1991 and the vehicle is still sitting here because of their incompentence. It may not happen often but it happened this time to me and they (Pennzoil) Did Not Stand Behind their warranty.

Here is another web site to look at that offers some pore size testing of the filters. I did the testing another guy did the rest of the write up and web page. If you have any other questions about the testing let me know.

The Wix brand only was a middle of the pack as far as filtration ability. Pure 1 and Fram Tough Guard were the best if your looking for filtration.

I have several collector hot rod cars and some other very expensive equipment. A lot of the guys I run around with drag race with some very expensive equipment (sub 8 sec. in 1/4). They almost always use Baldwin, Wix or Purolator. Nobody in the group, or even at the tracks, ever run a Fram filter. From what I'm told by most everyone, Fram used to be a decent filter many years ago. Now they are about the worst by a fairly large margin. If these guys use Baldwin, Wix, and Purolators on their $50k plus engines, I'll use them on mine.

I know that everyone makes the best filter, but one would have to ask the question about an oil filter that sells for $2 or $3.

How much quality can really go into the filter and still permit
the vendor and the manufacturer to make a profit?

Whatever filter anyone chooses, it should at least meet or exceed original equipment specs, but most important is changing the oil on time and using the proper viscosity.

Personally, I have used Mobile-1 synthetic oil and filters on my gasoline fueled engines for years with satisfaction.

As far as for my diesel, well, I'm listening to you guys. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've been using WIX/NAPA oil filters on my diesels and motorcycles (I use Motorcrafts on my autos 'cause Wally's has 'em for cheap /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ), for the past 5 years. No problems yet. Okay, I'll amend that - the WIX/NAPA's are white, and stick out like a sore thumb on my bikes, so, I paint 'em with some heat-resistant black paint first. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Change the filter and the oil regularly, as more than one poster's mentioned, and I don't think there'll be any problems.
