I live in northern BC and will be working tractor in some sub -20 weather. I have decided on 0w-40w synthetic oil and need to know what NON blended sources are available.
I live in the bush so will be traveling 4 hours to big town to buy and would like to know my options before making the trip.
The other question is do automotive synthetics work in this situation? Mobil, castrol etc come to mind.
From what I have read on this site any 0w-40w synthetic oil should be good. Is this correct?

First, get the engine broken in, seat the rings and other things. The oil must be CD rated not any automotive oil, some are rated for both. Also consider a 0W30 oil which will protect to 130 deg temp in the field.

I use my Kubota's in sub 0 weather here in Michigan in the winter and I run Shell 5-40 synthetic with no problems.

The trick, if you will is warming the engine prior to using the tractor. The gearcase lubricants will be very stiff so it's not the engine you need to worry about, but the gearcase.

I warm my engine with the gearbox in gear but the shuttle in neutral.

-20F to -30F very typical here as well. I also use Rotella 5w-40 synthetic just because it is readily available and very affordable. A block heater is a good friend when the temps fall below zero F.

Ditto ..... however, I run Mobil 1 0w40 European Car Formula synthetic in my Sprinter van (Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel) which sees far more cold weather use than my tractor .... obviously, it is a diesel rated oil (API SM/SL/SJ/CF)

It is a very good oil.

M1's 0w40 carries a light diesel spec and can't really handle the soot dispersant capability's a currant CJ-4 oil can, i really would stick with a 5w40 much better choice in diesel applications and will flow fine in them temps.

Schaeffer's Supreme 9000 5w40 for extreme cold temps. CJ-4 rated carries the same hogh performance capabilities you expect from Schaeffers with all the benefits.

Yeah, well ....... true enough ..... but then, unless I misunderstood the OP wasn't asking for a general oil recommendation for his heavy-duty Class 8 semi tractor ..... he was asking for 0w40 oil recommendation for a CUT .....

Yup ... newer ain't always better tho' ..... given a particular application.

CJ-4 oils were specifically formulated to meet compatibility requirements with particular emission devices (specifically diesel particulate filters) used on-road vehicles:

API CJ-4 Facts

In order to meet these compatibility requirements it appears some tradeoffs were made (despite what API and oil refiners/formulators might claim)

FWIW, M1 0w40 was the factory-fill from Mercedes on my OM 647 engine (2.7L, 154 HP) ........ and Mercedes approves it for use with extended drain intervals.

I suspect that if M1 0w40's soot dispersant capabilities were lacking, Mercedes would not be so inclined.

I do run extended drain intervals, which on average have ranged on average from 13K to 18K miles, although I have went much longer when I had the bypass filtration set up on it.

Personally, I currently have 345,000 miles on the vehicle using only this oil .... running in winter and summer conditions, ranging from south & west Texas (Laredo/El Paso), Arizona (Nogales, Tuscon, Phoenix) to Minnesota, Michigan (UP & LP), Ontario (as far up as Sudbury), and Quebec ..... operating in temps approaching 120 degrees F in the summer, and -25 below zero F in the winter ..... and have a number of friends, doing the same thing, with the same vehicle/motor/oil ..... with vehicle mileages ranging from 400K to over 800K ..... on original engines .....

My Blackstone UOA's speak for themselves, in terms of the performance of the product - note that the mileage on the current oil sump, as of the time of the following oil analysis, is 47,625 miles. Make up oil reported is cumulative (6.75 total quarts used over 47K+ miles):

Every high end oil has similar results, with similar documentation, and similar testimonials. This is the basis of all these arguements. The factory fill oil is nothing more than a business arrangement between the OEM and the oil company. Schaeffer has one of those arrangements with John Deere on a specific piece of equipment just like Mobile 1 does with Mercedes and Castrol with VW. Schaeffer's is not the only oil out there that can extend equipment life.

The basis of my position has always been lowering operating cost. Any lubricant that can perform in the same arena as Schaeffers is going to be more expensive, any lubricant that beats Schaeffers price is not going to be able to perform as well resulting in lower operating costs. Side by side comparisons on paper are going to be similar. Some numbers will be higher, some will be lower. A small scale test will result in proving a Schaeffer advantage through lower operating cost. I never ask anyone to switch an operation without small scale, long term testing. My cell is (512)785-5765. I am happy to provide anyone whatever information I can. The goal is a small scale test.

Well I have experience in driving 4 hours and not finding what I was looking for so I am thinking about ordering John Deere 0-40 and having it come by bus to nearest town.
From my reading it seems to be a good oil to go with. I know the price will be high but I am use to paying top dollar up here.
The other option is to go to the nearest town where they have a napa and see what they have. Does anyone know what synthetic oil Napa carries?
Transit said to break engine in first but then I see many autos come with synthetic. Is it old school or do I need to break it in with the OEM oil. If so I do have aproblem as I will only have about 40 hours before I have to change it for temp reasons..
