Ordered a New Tractor

Just ordered a 4720 with Air ride seat, e-hydro, r-4's, dual mid & single electro hydraulic rear SCV's, with a second power beyond, telescoping draft links, Elec. diverter kit for front electro hydraulic, block heater and brush guards for the warning lights.

400cx loader with replaceable cutting edge and a Woods BH90-X backhoe with a hydraulic thumb. $52,000 , I think the dealer could have done a little better but he wore me down.

Any comments?

Good luck deere 4000 series are fine machines, please provide pic's, heated cab will be fine in Maine winters...................

I'll get some pic's. Can't afford the cab, but yes it would be nice in the cold. I do lite logging in the winter so no cab is better.

Sweet. I've got a 2011 4120 ehydro, R4's with 400x loader, electrohydraulic 3rd SCV and plumbing kit to run the 3rd to the loader. I've got 100 hours on it so far and love it. If you are going to use it in the woods you are going to be suprised on how nimble it is.

nice! I've got a MY 2011 4720 cab purchased in Jan and got about 115 hours on it now. got a 400cx self level loader, 72" woods RC, 84" frontier GM, BB, r4s, tire chains. thus far I've been happy with the 4720, no problems.

I have kept my 2000 4700, I am telling myself not to use the new tractor in the woods until the old one dies. Well we all know how long we can stay away from using the NEW tractor

Congratulations on your new tractor! Sounds like quite a machine.:thumbsup:

It will be interesting to hear your comparison of the new 4720 to your old 4700. I like my used 4600 very much so far.

Yes Dennis, it will be an interesting comparison. The only down side I know of right off is, it doesn't have a Yanmar engine.

I haven't formed an opinion on whether the new JD engines are better. However, I will say that my Yanmar engine has started amazingly quick EVERY time. I bought the thing at the beginning of August, so I haven't been through cold weather with it yet. My brother in law has 3 tractors, one of which is an older/smaller JD/Yanmar. He says that one has always started right up, no matter how cold the weather.

I've never (knock on wood) had a problem with my 4700 starting. The only thing I've had too do to the engine is, a water pump and front main seal with almost 6000 hrs. I have replaced the starter, but thats not a Yanmar part. I like that the Yanmar is an indirect injection, the Deere power tech is a direct injection which will start harder in cold weather.
This is why Deere is sending these Power Techs out from the factory with a block heater in cold climates.

i hate to burst your bubble, but I must
The Deere 4700 uses the Yanmar 4TNE88 which is DIRECT injection. The current Deere 3000 series uses the 3TNV88 which is also direct injection, and of course, the power tech is a direct injection engine.

Direct injection is in theory more efficient. There are no glow plugs or pre chambers in the direct injection systems. The entire combustion area is contained in the piston crown or cylinder. They are known for better starting and engine heaters are not generally needed unless it is SUPER cold, or you ask for one. Or.... the dealer says you need one because they make a few bucks more on every sale.

Both the Yanmar and the Power Tech engines are very good. Remember, Deere has been making engines for a long time too.

well i thought the engine on my 4520 was a power tech? and it does have glow plugs but i never had to use them even in 15 degree weather . not as cold as some places i know but it is cold for here!

The 4520 has a Deere engine in it and while it is a good engine it doesn't start as easy as a Yanmar from my experience.

In use the 4520 has had plenty of power and runs flawlessly so far.

I thought that glow plugs are automatically utilized when starting the engine. And using the manifold heater and/or block heater is up to the user...?

charleyfarmall, you are correct. I stand corrected, after looking at the Tech CD the Yanmar is direct injection. I'm not a diesel mechanic and all this time I assumed it was a indirect injection because it started so easy in very cold weather. It does have a glow-plug in the Air intake chamber which is a must in cold weather. The Tech super at my local JD dealer has told me that the Power tech will not start as well in the cold and the block heater is a must. I will see, After the 500 hr. break in I will change the oil over to Synthetic (Delvac 1 by Mobil) which I have been using in the 4700 since break in and that I'm sure has been a big help in starting in the cold.
