One fuel related law that we do have here that is stupid and well deserving of any and all ridicule is that when the nozzle shuts off, they can't 'round up' to an even number, as that would of course result in thousands of gallons spewing out and creating a superfund site at every gas station in the state, going from $23.43 to $23.50.
So if you have one of those finicky filler necks it could take several visits to get a fill up.

The really nice thing about the hand pumped service station was they did not need electricity to dispense gas.

You're kiddin, right?

It shuts off once, and the guy shuts it down and you have to go away?

I'm seeing a trend here, seems most Oregon residents rode the short bus to school

Now how many of you recall when pumping gas was just that? You had to work a lever till the glass tank was full and then you drained out the tank into whatever you were putting the gas in. The amount you used was shown by calibration marks on the tank.

Me. I saw s very stupid claim somewhere on the net that the gas was pumped up there "so the consumer could see what grade of gas he was getting. They didn't have totalizer pumps back then.

That's right! I had forgotten that; they were gravity feed. Of course back in the day, the old Fords had gravity feed also...no fuel pumps!

I'm one who usually tries to stop it on even nickels anyway instead of pennies, and I'm not sure why I do that. Since I'm using a credit card, and the same credit card may have odd number charges from the grocery store and other stores, it seems silly to care about the gas charge being on even nickels.

Last I knew the nozzle on a diesel pump wouldn't fit into one designed for gas.

And I'm very glad it won't. Only because of that did I not wind up with a tank full of it. Absent mindedness has penalties.

At the time I wondered how many times a driver of a new diesel truck or car wound up with a tank of gas.

There's some comments in this thread regarding night time gas availability. When I was a teenager and worked in my Dad's service station, there were at least 3 other stations in that little town, but NONE open after 9 p.m. However, most of us had our name and phone number posted on the door, and we did occasionally have a person call, although since that was before cell phones, it was usually the local police officer who called, or came and knocked on the door to tell us there was someone in dire need of gasoline. So Dad or I would get dressed and go sell them some gasoline. That was in the 1950's.

Then in the mid to late 60's I was a police officer in Dallas, and after 11 p.m., in the entire city of Dallas, there was one service station, one grocery store, and one drugstore open all night. The things that were open all night were the bowling alleys and a few cafes. I can only remember 2 full service restaurants but several short order or burger joints. And NOW, service stations, restaurants, grocery stores, drugstores all over the place open all night.

When I was a kid - there was a small town north of where we lived that had a hand pump at the gas station. I was always happy to stop there - my dad would let me pump the gas up into the big glass cylinder.
