Oregon Drivers Can Now Learn To Pump Their Own Gas

I worked in a gas station during ranch off season from age 14 until I left for USAF Basic Training in 67. While you filled car with gas, you checked oil and washed their windshield. Checked tire pressure if any looked low. Mostly locals but, occasionally cars off the Interstate too.

Shortly later many stations starting offering self serve for a small Discount, then attendants just disappeared by early 1970痴.

That's how we transitioned in Wisconsin also (although I recall the differential between "self" and "full" was about 10 cents. Of course that's when "full" meant washing the windshield and checking the oil. When the pennies start mattering the Oregon folks will figure it out.

That's the wrong question. The question is: "Why *shouldn't* anyone be able to pump their own gas?"

It's easy to do. It's not dangerous. It is not messy. Don't have to wait for someone else to do it. Saves money by not requiring an employee to do it. It also aids in personal responsibility and independence, as evidenced by all the wailing from some OR folks who feel they can't/won't/shouldn't have to do it themselves vs. 48 other states' worth of people who seem OK handling it.

Do these folks who are diametrically opposed to self-service pumps also have other people fill air in their tires, check their oil, change their oil, wash their windshields, scrape snow off their windshields, hold their hand when they pee, etc.?

Yes, I'm filled with sarcasm. I don't know why, it just happened. Apologies in advance.

Oregon is ruled by Democrats. Are you proud or ashamed? If the latter I'll offer that it is a big state and I'm sure you have some normal people there.

I agree, with current modern cars. But did you ever put gas in a 1957 Chevrolet? I suppose owners, as well as station attendants soon learned, but the first time someone does it, he wishes he hadn't. If you had the nozzle set to shut off automatically, it would do that . . . almost immediately after it shot gas 3 feet out behind the car. Of course the same thing would happen if you were just holding the nozzle unless you learned to LISTEN for the sound that would tell you to stop.
