Oregon Drivers Can Now Learn To Pump Their Own Gas

Here's the irony of the fuel dispensing system in Oregon. Whenever I need off-road diesel for my tractor, I pull up to the pump, and fill my 5 gallon cans, no law against it. However, if I need gasoline dispensed into a can, it's not permitted for me to do it myself. However, if I pull up to the gas pump and need a few gallons in my motorcycle, I'm now trusted to fill the tank.

I agree, with current modern cars. But did you ever put gas in a 1957 Chevrolet? I suppose owners, as well as station attendants soon learned, but the first time someone does it, he wishes he hadn't. If you had the nozzle set to shut off automatically, it would do that . . . almost immediately after it shot gas 3 feet out behind the car. Of course the same thing would happen if you were just holding the nozzle unless you learned to LISTEN for the sound that would tell you to stop.

Sure, but we're not in 1957 anymore. So time to move on. :)

I moved outside a very small town in KY last year and took my wife's car in for an oil change at the local 'Service station'. The car was up on a hoist, and a couple of guys in their 60's were sitting out front talking, when a big sedan pulled up. One jumped up, ran over to the car, and began pumping gas. Inside was a woman about 65yo who never once looked to the side. She rolled her window down about 1" and passed a bill through the opening, again without looking to the side or the attendant. He took it, said 'Thank you' reached into his shirt pocket, and pulled out a wad of bills, adding the new one to the roll.

I just laughed to myself, recognizing this had been going on since both he and the woman were teens. She got full service and he kept the 'till' in his pocket. A guy from CA pulled up, and the attendant just sat there reading a paper, and watched him fill up on his own. Next big sedan pulled up, and he jumped up and filled it for the lady driving. Again, she didn't look to the side or say a word.

Times... sometimes they change and sometimes they stay the same.

All that ink attacked the few brain cells she had left

Love it...

I simply don't buy fuel in Oregon...

My first encounter thought I was going to be tackled... the guy came running out late at night... first thought was the place had just been robbed and then followed by profanity and ending with another stupid Californian...

Last experience was total ciaos in Medford... the station was like a jigsaw puzzle of cars and one attendant... he did not secure my gas cap and a few minutes down the road the check engine light came on... thinking just what I need hundreds of miles from home...

Apparently there are work arounds from the guys in the Harley Club and Model A Club... you can have the attendant hand you the nozzle, fill and then hand the nozzle back to the attendant and still comply with the law...

Feels great to cross into Washington and save my empty tanks for Gull Harbor Mercantile.

One fuel related law that we do have here that is stupid and well deserving of any and all ridicule is that when the nozzle shuts off, they can't 'round up' to an even number, as that would of course result in thousands of gallons spewing out and creating a superfund site at every gas station in the state, going from $23.43 to $23.50.
So if you have one of those finicky filler necks it could take several visits to get a fill up.

Exactly... my friend has to tell them to click on the lowest fill setting or he would never fill the tank...

With the antique cars you have hold the nozzle to fill... when the tank is full... the gasoline as at the brim.

When my brother was still in High School back in CA, he had a job at a gas station across from Southland Mall. One night two guys came in with a gun, tied him up, emptied out the cash register, and then pumped gas for everyone that showed up for another hour or so. Then when things slowed down, they took off and eventually my brother untied himself and called the police. I have no idea what happened after that, but he quit working there and got a job doing something else.

Similar to my brother... was in the cashier booth and the robber fired point blank at the glass... he quit that night... he did not realize at the time the bullet proof glass was not rated for repeated shots.

In MD you cant go by the pump handle color, not unusual to see green ones on gas. We have red, yellow, black, green, they can be anything.

He was slipping packets of meth to the ladies with cash....
