Same here... as long as I can walk... I can pump my own fuel.

It depends on the level of sense the attendant has; most are smart enough to realize that if it shuts off immediately that they need to restart it at a slower rate, but technically, they should end the transaction there. As for the other, no, there is no round off, when it shuts off yer done.

While that might be true for a percentage, most of this stuff occurs in the legislature due to the supermajority (guess which side), and they find out about it after the first of the year when all the laws take effect. I was at a gas station on 31 Dec topping off and mentioned the tax increase and no one inside the store knew about it, including the cashier. Everyone gripes after the fact about all the stupidity, and complain that they never got to vote on this. As our state rep and local radio guy says, "You do get to vote on these things, you just keep electing the wrong people to represent you."

Dunno about where you are but every place I have filled up recently you can 'top off" by pulling the nozzle back a bit. Only one station has one where that will only work for a quick squeeze and then the nozzle pressure switch releases. Not worth playing with 'topping off" anyhow as you don't gain much and if you're trying to round off the numbers run too fast to do it.

I agree, with current modern cars. But did you ever put gas in a 1957 Chevrolet? I suppose owners, as well as station attendants soon learned, but the first time someone does it, he wishes he hadn't. If you had the nozzle set to shut off automatically, it would do that . . . almost immediately after it shot gas 3 feet out behind the car. Of course the same thing would happen if you were just holding the nozzle unless you learned to LISTEN for the sound that would tell you to stop.

I didn't have those problems. 57 Bel Air in 1957 - drove it until 1959. Nobody but me every filled it.

My BMW got more and more finicky about filling... constantly shutting off prematurely during the fill. Couldn't figure out what it was for the longest time as the problem got worse and worse. On a trip to NorCal last year, I had to fuel in Oregon and I tried to tell the attendant it was not going to be fun and they needed to stay at the nozzle. Of course he didn't listen and I had to get out of the car and keep bugging him to click it back on. It shut off at least 20 times.

I finally figured out what the problem was talking on a Bimmer forum. Had to replace a fuel charcoal canister filter that apparently was causing back pressure. After suffering for so long wiggling the nozzle just right, I am back to squeeze once and forget it. :dance1:

Only time i was in Oregon, i was flying from yakima to seattle in a turboprop around rainier, and after takeoff, our flight got diverted to portland, i forget the reason. Once we got to portland, the airline got us off the plane, and said find your own way to seattle. They suddenly had a mob on their hands, at least as big a mob as a turboprop holds, that said our flight was to seattle, get us to seattle. So they eventually did.

SeaTac is not a good place to land at night. I was on Change of Station in the AF from Alaska to Texas. Planned a side trip to N. Idaho for family visit. Off the plane at SeaTac and discoverd that there was absolutely no ground transportation out of Seattle until 8am. I had planned to grab a bus - no bus, no train.

Hahahaha. Poor babies! The last time I pumped gas for someone other than my wife was about 1972.

Convenience and speed. No need to wait for an attendant.
Fortunately, the majority of the stations where I get fuel, have trained, drug screened, well mannered attendants. The only waiting involved is when there are vehicles in front of you, being served.

As far as damage caused by attendants to any of my vehicles; it hasn't happened in the 41 years I've lived in Oregon.

I don't know if I would call my last experience damage but is sure was inconvenient and added stress as I had a lot of miles to cover... don't even blame Medford station attendant all that much... the station was like one giant jigsaw puzzle of vehicles to buy gas before heading down 5 to California and one attendant.

First... he gave me the wrong credit card back... sure glad I checked.

Second the Check Engine Light came on a few minutes after I left the station and got back on 5... the gas cap was not on tight...

Glad there was no damage but I sure didn't like having to pull off 5 wondering what now... it was dark with many miles to go...

Thinking what might have gone wrong and realizing I had just filled up... sure enough the cap was not one tight at all... it really wasn't even on loose...

I'm from the school that God helps those that help themselves... if I had fueled my vehicle there would be no one to blame but myself.

Now I fill up in Yreka heading North and Gull Harbor Mercantile in Olympia heading South...

I keep seeing this picture on FB and my first thought is why? If the nozzle fits into the fill spout, then wouldn't it mean that she is driving a diesel vehicle? Unleaded fuel is through a smaller nozzle that only fits in a smaller fill spout. Am I wrong, or are there diesel nozzles that are the same size and unleaded nozzles?

I'm sure it wasn't a real time pic but there are probably some pumps where you can get them mixed up.
