I don't mean the collective "we", I just mean our family. Kind of a north-south rivalry thing.

There have been several "movements" over the years to break Ca. into 2, 3 and even 8 different states at one time or another.

The 2-way was split somewhere between San Jose and Salinas. The 3-way split divided it into North, Central, and South. The 8-way split divided it into regions, and made the Bay area and LA separate states on their own.

I think the transplants way outnumber the natives these days.

IMHO, California ends about 3 miles south of Santa Rosa, I don't know what the call the rest of that stuff south of there.
My wife is a native (hatched) down in SoCal's most infamous San Diego....it ain't California from my humble 4 years or so living in that mess.

Scruffy, it may be more correct to say that Oregon ends 3 miles south of Santa Rosa.

Glennmac, Pdxman, I stand humbly corrected! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Having grown up in a combination of SWOregon and NWCalifornia, I agree that the two have more in common than the area south of Santa Rosa.....in fact, I could suggest moving that line to just north of the northern city limits of Ukiah. SoCal has been creeping northward as the city folk keep expanding their bedrooms.

Rat -

Did quite a bit of diving all up and down the Monterey area. Beautiful place.

I don't golf any more, especially since the kid I loaned my clubs to, in turn, loaned them to someone else. Never saw them again. /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif Ione is getting pretty close to my tractor property (outside Sutter Creek), but I've never seen the golf course.

Although that area from just south of Watsonville to just north of Santa Barbara is still pretty nice. We just spent a few days down there going through Big Sur and such, and it was a very pleasant trip.

I just say no to golf. My Dad & Brother tried to get me interested, but it never clicked with me. Also, when you talk about Central California, I always tend to think in terms of Central Valley.

One thing's for sure. It's a really big state. Anti-homogenous too.

ouch I'm just over the marin border - It seems like country - acres looking out on the petaluma river- have to admit it gets a bit dense (in many ways) further south, but I like having the option of San Francisco fairly close for that change acoupla times a year. and I challenge anyone to beat the climate. I grew up in the military and lived just about everywhere in the US. Northern California can not be beat. (But don't tell anyone OK?)

Just read in the paper tonight that the north 22 counties are starting a movement to designate those counties as "Upstate California". The line runs east/west just a little north of Sacramento Think the southern-most county was Mendocino. More power to them. That area constitutes about 3% of the total population of California, and roughly 1/3 of the land area.

BTW - We took a pic of the sunset on August 23. This is the result. I have tentatively called this one The sky's on fire!

I'm just catching up with some of these posts....MAN what a view you have there. I was happy just looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains until I got to see someone who lives IN the mountains. (Plus, the Blue Ridge are just bumps, really). I used to think I lived rurally but now I don't know. My neighbors are far and few but they have the same ZIP CODE!!! Great shots...nice place!!!
