cjfling , here are the pics of the rollers on the exterior sliding doors and the latch setup I use to keep them closed. It works really well for what it's made for. We are happy with it. These items can be bought at most farm stores, Co Ops and probably some hardware stores. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the pictures. I have the latches to close the doors. The rollers wouldn't work as well for me because my barn isn't "finished" as nicely as yours. I just have U panel there on the button instead of a flat surface. I've seen rail systems made by the same companies that make the latches, but haven't been able to find anyone to tell me how they work (including the folks selling them). I need to know that before buying so that I'll know if it'll work with my doors or will require modification.

Again thanks and a big WOW on your project.

I think it's better to leave em' hang freely on the bottom like mine. A rail along the bottom would have to be cleaned and maintained regularly or there would be dirt and debris buildup making them very hard to open and close. Also bottom railing can be damaged rendering them useless. I myself don't have the time to be doing constant maintenance on doors so I chose a simple system that works well. You may be able to somehow attach a flat treated board to your barn so you could mount the rollers. Just a thought.

That's a good point. I'm gonna have to do something though, because my doors are big and the wind can really catch them if you aren't watching. I was thinking of some heavy flashy or similar would work and then I could use your system.

Thx

USNative,

Wow, I have done it again. Way more than anybody wants to know. You were wise to deal with those trees that are plenty close to you house as far as I am concerned. There is enough energy in those trees when falling to pulverize some very big stuff.

Not necessarily Nick, I enjoy reading all you have to say and I am sure others here do as well, as you are a very knowledgeable guy with a lot of good input. And I do intend to keep close tabs on the cottonwoods as they are very old and some have been removed in the past maybe because of the same issues you have mentioned.

Just to let all TBN'rs know, we have pretty much put the barn on hold for now as we are concentrating on another improvement. We are now having a half of a mile of fence line replaced as it was in dire need of repair. I have been helping the fencing contractor with some of it as he is knocking some $ off the price for my help. I have done a lot of fence work and I am experienced enough to help him a lot. A day or two and the line will be finished. The Post Pounder Being used is really doing it's job on our rocky ground. That thing cost Tom (the contractor) 20 Grand but man does it do a great job! We are going to be eliminating the barbed wire and going with Red Brand Barbless.

I know this is a bit off topic but I wanted to throw this bit of info in and show a few pics to give those interested a view of the latest.

You can still see the Our Beautiful Barn in the pics at a different angle than the previous pictures. You can also see our pond off in the distance. The geese and mallard ducks land there almost everyday especially in the later part of the day and it is nice to view them.

As for the Barn, I have horses with their babies in 4 of the 5 stalls. I am working on getting the babies trained and separated from their mom's so we can get em' sold. Nice to actually have our horses in the barn and seeing it being utilized for it's intended purpose. I may post some pics later of the barn full of horses for all who might like to see how it's working for stalling them. Someone give me a holler if you would be interested in that and I will post some.

Thanks for looking and and when I do get around to getting done with what little there is left on the barn (Tack Room) I will be posting that too.

USNative,

In looking at the ground around your new barn I was wondering how you got the posts in with that rock. That driver looks to be a very good answer. In comparison, building fences in our area is so much easier than at your location, there is virtually no comparison. Not only are you dealing with the rock, but it looks very cold so the ground is probably frozen hard as well, at least the surface.

The new barn looks great from a distance and your new fence job is impressive considering the conditions you are dealing with. Nice straight fence. Your idea of using wire that is not barbed sounds very wise around horses. Cattle can deal with barbed wire pretty well, but I have seen some nasty injuries on horses from barbed wire. That choice of wire should be good for the horses and will keep the vet. bills down.

My oldest Son's family are horse people and I notice they utilize plank fencing in confinement areas and tall woven wire in combination with electric tape on the large pasture areas. They removed all of the barbed wire fence on their place prior to bringing in the horses. Their girls show horses in a wide variety of competitions and injuries of any kind don't fit with their program.

You mentioned that you were changing priorities by setting the new barn aside for now while you catch up on the fences. Experience has shown me that you are doing exactly what the rest of the farmers and ranchers do. I don't know if you ever get completely ahead of the game, but it feels awfully good as long as you are not getting any further behind.

Having the horses inside must be exciting now that you are beginning to use your new facility and getting to watch the fencing go in is all part of seeing your operation develop into a working ranch you and the TBN members will be proud of.

I hope we don't have to wait until spring when work begins again on the new barn to hear from you. It might be slightly off subject, but seeing some of your other activities in the mean time is definitely all right by me. Hope I don't get into trouble with the moderators with that last remark.
