I guess I come at this a little differently from Axlehub. Assuming the OP recounted events accurately, I'm assuming we agree that there is no excuse for the bad behavior of the first dealer. But I also think the OP did nothing at all wrong by mentioning Barlows, even had the first guy not acted like a smug jerk. Retail tractor shopping is nothing more than an open, competitive bidding process. It's not unusual for equipment vendors to know who they are bidding against in response to an RFP. I doubt Barlows minds one whit if they're used as a stalking horse. Moreover, absent an understanding that the terms of a vendor's bid are to be kept confidential, there is nothing wrong with saying to dealer X "I'd like to support you as the more local dealer, but dealer Y is offering this to me. I owe it to myself and my family to be sensible with my money. What can you do to get closer to their deal?"
I understand your point completely Threepoint. However in your example of what you'd say . . Not mentioning who the other dealers you are talking too will focus more on the one you are talking to. It eliminates excuses yet tells them you have better pricing. Where another dealer is located (near or far) . . Has no bearing or need on the person you are talking to. Personally my goal is not envy or jealousy or excuses . . . I'm looking at educating the dealer of my needs. . My personslity and theirs are the issue .
Just my style.
Now if it had to do with a different quality of service (like untrained vs trained) then its different. Or a history of someone dumping equipment in an area without proper preparation of the product.
But sales people can be taught deceptive practices . . one of them is blame the competition or murky the water or confuse the prospect. Giving names of other dealers is the key for using that decrptive training. Trust me . . that training is absolutely done at some dealerships.
What is the tough part in my method . . Is to be honest yet not be bullied into telling the names or actual quotes. And again believe me "teaching bully-ing technics us part of some sakes departments."
