Hi all, I am trying to finish up a screen porch project I started two years ago and have just completed adding a small kitchen in the sheltered end. It's mainly 10' of countertop with nice oak cabinets which will have a 20''x20'' sink but no cooptop. I plan to purchase a very nice, high-end "hot plate'' for cooking plus using frydaddy and other small applilances.

I do want a range hood tho, my first thought was to help remove the moisture from cooking and secondly to remove smoke, which obviously will dispel anyway since it's open on three sides.

So, my question is, does anyone have any exp or advice on "vented vs unvented" range hoods. I am not worried about cost within reason; I am worried about butchering up the cabinets and losing some of the soffitt space above the range hood.

I understand the ventfree units use a charcoal type filter and do ok with smoke and odors but what about moisture. If I go vented, it will be up into the attic and over to the soffit to vent. tks for any advice and input.

If you can vent the range hood to the outside- you should go for it.

Fresh air is good- charcoal pads will need to be replaced at some point-they trap the odors on the inside of your home- rather that remove the odors though an exhaust fan.

If you are using grease to fry foods-- you need a vent with an exhaust fan

Why cant you run the vent directly through your roof??

I can run it thru the roof, I just didn't want the roof penetration and venting to the outside soffit should be sufficient, I thought. Anyway, I was trying to avoid butchering the cabinets with the vent pipe and thought vent free might work. I also thought that since the porch is open on three sides that there would be enough free air flow to compensate for not having a vented exhaust fan.

But, I like your thought of "fresh air" is good. tks for the feedback.

Isn't moisture remove a bit of a moot point in a screen porch? Every time it rains you will have more moisture than the occasional meal will produce.

I understand the point on moisture given that it's an outdoor kitchen, my concern is the type of moisture. I think "cooking moisture," vapors and grease pose a bigger threat to the cabinets than just "wet moisture."

I have considered an alternate drafting system but the wall is a no-go and I don't want to cut into the countee top for a ''down draft system."

Why put a range hood in at all?

Just for the average cooking and frying now and then you aren't going to have a problem with smoke or grease.
We had range hoods in two fairly sealed up houses and they collected some grease on the filters over time. There wasn't enough smoke or grease compensate for the noise I had to listen to running the thing.

The 6 year old tightly sealed house we are in now doesn't have one but I was going to install one later. Now after 6 years there isn't any grease film on cabinets or anyplace else that we can tell, and my wife cooks a lot, so no vent for me.

I wouldn't mess with it.

Vent it to the outside. We used use to have a non-vented hood. Once we built our house and added the vented hood, we realized what we were missing.

It's outdoors... Put a ceiling fan in the shelter and be done with it.

We have lived in our house for 13 years. I do not think I ever turned on the unvented hood to cook. Maybe we don't cook the same way you cook. The house I grew up in had no hood. Grandparent's houses had no hoods and they cooked with lard, had bacon, eggs and oatmeal every morning.

Forget downdraft. Vent free is worse. Forget ceiling fan.

If you want to be fume free put in a powerful range hood vented to the outside.

I prefer building my own out of galvanized sheet metal as a liner to the decorative wooden structure I build. I use a remote fan on the roof to pull a vacuum on the hood (no fan actually in the hood.) It is way less obnoxious in the noise department.

I use a variable speed motor with control out of sight up in the hood. By having a powerful motor and large fan you can really get after smells if you need to do so and throttle back to a lower speed for regular duty. The exhaust fan will require make up air. If the porch is just screen not windows then fine. If it is windows you will need to open one to get make up air.

Thank you Pat, this is a great idea. I may very well take your advice, but what kind of exhause fan motor do you use and where might one like myself find such a beast. tks again

I am not an electric motor source guru. I just asked my heat and air contractor to get me a variable speed motor and a solid state speed controller that mounts in a standard light switch enclosure. The controller is out of sight inside the hood but easily reachable. The light switch and controller are in metal boxes and all underhood wiring is in rigid metal conduit for safety in case of grease fire or...

I asked for a certain cubic ft per min rating which I don't recall after a few years. I'd look at the specs for hoods at a store like Home Depot or Lowes and go for at least as much as the best but more likely 2-3 times as much for your max rating. Commercial heat and air suppliers/wholesalers or places like Grangers maybe. I strongly recommend a roof mounted fan assy to get as much noise out of your working and conversing zone as possible. I'd mount the fan on rubber cushions to decouple the vibration so the structure it is mounted on is not used for a sounding board.

My hood is a bit more "evolved" than typical as it uses two fans, one to do exhaust and one to supply make up air in the form of an air curtain. On a screened in porch where you aren't running A/C, makeup air is a non-issue.

Although I have seen hood lights that were fluorescent I don't recommend it. Go with standard bulbs. I use floods up under the hood out of sight but very nicely illuminating the cook top. A light dimmer for those is a nice touch. The new LED lights are a possibility too but a tad pricey and may not be compatible with dimmer (you would have to check.)

I assume you mean hoods for gas or electric ranges? Except for a greater risk of grease fire in a hood for a gas stove I don't think there is much difference.

yes, thank you for suggestion, i think gas hoods are much flexible than electric because electric cable leak may be trouble.

We are starting a kitchen renovation, which will give us a lot more working area & storage space within the same smallish footprint. Cabinets have been ordered, granite countertop nearing decision, general look & feel of the kitchen decided. I'm sure I will be coming back with other questions later.

I've been lurking here, and reading reviews on other sites, trying to decide on which gas or dual-fuel range. Several people have recommended the GE Cafe, and then I read some very negative reviews about it. Saw raves here on the Bertalozzi, but reports of small oven & fan running automatically. MIxed reviews of Electrolux. How is Bosch?

For now i am looking at these range hoods, any advice would be welcome !
