Outdoor stone fire pit

I am looking to buy/build a stone fire pit for my back yard. I don't want a propane one. I like to have "camp fires" in my back yard on occassions (sipping on adult beverages with friends) and don't want to just throw a pile of wood on the ground and burn it. I want something like you would see in the Texas hill country. I have absolutely no idea on how to build one or where to even start.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions or where I could get one off the net.

I have been looking for a fire pit to replace the cement block joke of a pit the previous owner built in the back yard.....

A couple of the brick distributors here have outdoor fireplaces made out of retaining wall bricks. Looks about the same as the pic in the previous post. One has a kit that includes the bricks needed and a metal grate for the top.

I'll see if I can find a pic.

We have hand built 2 out of feild stones and mortar. Looks good at the lake but not as neat as one out of flat stone or brick.

Here is one that I made this summer. It's nothing fancy but the price was right and it works great when it is a little windy.

I set a large ring in my concrete patio when we poured it; 5ft diameter, lined the inside with river rock covered in sand, then set a steel ring with lazer cut deer and pine trees on it. Steel ring is 36" but there are larger ones. I got my ring from Cabela's for under $50 I think.

Those are very nice. Great job fellows. I am in the first stage of my raised patio outside of our back sliding door. Barn stone with Brussels block pavers. I have been trying to convince the boss that we need a fire pit with out any luck. She would rather have a natural gas grill and a hot tub. The simplest fire pit rings I have found are the rolled steel ones at the big box stores or go to a precast concrete products business and get a manhole ring. They work great and if you want to move it to another location after a while just flip it up and roll it!

where did you get the bricks from and how much did it cost you?

They are landscaping bricks with a flat bottom so they do not interlock they just sit on top of each other. I bought about 120 of them from Menards for a little over $200 if I remember right.

Very nice looking Bigtiller. I would not have thought of that concept, but I'm pertty sure I'm going to do something similar myself. Those landscape stones are very common, Walmart, HD, Lowes, etc.

If you want something that easy to move this works great.
A mortar pan, I just use rocks under the 4 corners to keep it off the ground.

A truck tire rim makes a great camp fire. Could be had free at most truck companys but now may need to pay at least scrap value.

Be careful when using stone or porous brick as they can explode from the heat.

I always get confused; why have a fire and hide it in a pit? Should it it not be up and above where it can be seen??

That's why the fire pit ring is so nice. Lay it on the ground, surround it by your favorite stone and there you have it.

Yes that is true, but you still have the fire down below. Why not place it up high so it can be properly observed and have homage placed on it??

as someone said above, remember to line the fire part with firebrick unless you enjoy shards of exploding stone.

Here is one I made just for cool evenings and what not. It was CHEAP. I "picked up" the rocks from the river (free) on various fishing outings. The 4 concrete bags were $20.00. Plus the $15.00 for the case of cold beer. Total cost $35.00.
