We can only dream. To get rid of a tax code the average american cannot possible understand or keep up with the changes should be priority. It takes dedicated Tax Accountants just to make sense of it all.
The reason why we won't see this is congress has too much self interest in using the tax code to manipulate and control.

My favorite:

Abolish income tax and have all tax collected on sales. The average american would save thousands. Why you ask?

1. EVERYONE would pay their fair share. Drug dealers, prostitutes, under the table workers, no screwy deductions meant for the wealthy...
2. Most merchants already have a system in place for collecting and reporting sales tax. The methods and technology are already here.
3. Everyone pays a proportionate amount based on how lavishly they live. If I can only afford a $1,500 hooptie of a car I pay a proportionate amount and the guy Buying his 2nd Mercedes or Yacht pays more.
4. If the economy does well, the government revenue does well. It gives a direct incentive for the government to ensure the people are doing well.
5. The rate would be fairly low compared to the income tax rates, because everyone is paying their share instead of the middle class hard worker being the main source of IRS revenue.

Probably other benefits I am not thinking of...but I can't think of too many disadvantages. Grocery store food, of course, remains tax free to minimize the impact on the elderly on fixed incomes.

Two more points:
1. Item sold overseas are not taxed. Meaning that they are more competitive in a world market. That Ford would drop 27% in price on the showroom floor overseas. That of course spurs sales.
2. The elimination of the tax code as a method of social engineering. Pushing people to products "approved" by government with tax breaks and slamming others with "windfall" taxes.
There's even a tax prebate to help those in need.

How often in these mass shootings have the following thing(s) happened:

1 - The shooter has had or has mental issues that other people were aware of, yet did nothing about it
2 - The shooter bought the weapons and lied when filling out the Form 4473
3 - The shooter bought the weapons legally because he'd never been adjudicated as being mentally incompetent
4 - The shooter obtained the weapons illegally, either stealing them or getting them through a straw buyer
5 - If the shooter lived after the shooting, it was determined that they were mentally incompetent to stand trial

Gunny is onto something here. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Many gun owners have not fired their weapon in years, many will only pull the trigger to shoot paper, many will only pull the trigger to kill an animal for food, very few will ever pull the trigger in self defense (in a non combat situation). Yet in the cases that make the national news it is soon discovered that the shooter was not quite right in the head. It has been way too long since I have been to church, but I remember we still live in a "fallen world". Gun control will never fix what is wrong in the heart or the head as long as we live in a society where people use violence to get what they want. We had a case in Houston where a prominent woman ran over and killed her husband with her Mercedes. There is a case in VT where a woman has been convicted of killing her husband by purposely driving her car into an obstacle. A Houston woman drowned all her kids. A Dallas woman cut off the limbs of her children. I'm sure others can remember murders committed in their respective areas.

The deadliest attack on a school occurred in 1927 in the small rural farming community of Bath, Michigan. 45 people died - 38 of whom were children. A disgruntled farmer used dynamite to blow up the occupied school building.

Again, people kill people. Taking away the right to own a gun will not prevent murder. The courts are too lenient with those convicted of crimes. My motor home was struck by a 20lb piece of concrete thrown from an overpass while I was driving 60 mph on the freeway. The DA would not file attempted murder charges, only malicious mischief, on the perpetrator even though a half dozen vehicles were involved in the case.

What happens when guns are outlawed and only outlaws have guns?

We have had a number of cases where a citizen with a CHL and carrying has fended off car jackers, shot robbers and saved their own life from an attacker. I know of a bank that posted a sign - CHL owners Welcome!

I am for fully enforcing the gun laws currently on the books and for dealing harshly with those who insist on violence. I think the conversation should move from gun control to what can society do to help those with mental issues. God knows we have enough of them!

I'd call your proposal a good start. I suspect the NRA would not like it as they have fought all sorts of attempts to make this type of data sharing on gun owners illegal.

This plan wouldn't be sharing any data about gun owners - most gun owners have already gone through a NICS check, this plan simply provides a tool that NICS would crosslink against the possibility of prior mental treatment or evaluation. Just because someone has been mentally evaluated doesn't mean they're mentally incompetent of that they've been adjudicated as such, it would throw up as "let's check this out a little more" flag.

Fine with me so long as it is progressive and includes capital gains and inheritance.

I'm totally against an inheritance tax, a situation could and would involve some fine farms that have to be split up or sold because the children of the owners couldn't afford to pay the taxes and keep land that had been in the family for years.
Taxes were already collected on both the land and from any income earned by the people that originally bought the land - to me that's a double tax

I agree with your analysis. Question is whether the Tea Party faction starts behaving like politicians who must reach compromise or if they remain unbending missionaries.

Without unbending missionaries, the United States would not exist.

Yes I approve of the right of government to seek and execute a search warrant when they suspect illegal activities at a residence. I believe the courts are the appropriate place to dispute the government charges. I don't think you respond to a search warrant by arming yourself with semiautomatic weapons and participating in a firefight.

The only countries that would support your revolution are those who would want to take the USA down. Little hard to imagine how they could do it anyways as almost every major port is either in a blue state or a heavily urbanized blue part of a red state.

Check our slash pine's thinly veiled comments about "recent" immigrants (read brown people) being the political problem for the right wing as the basis of my sarcastic white guys comment. Funny you failed to see his remarks as racist but picked right up on the sarcasm in mine. (Warning, more sarcasm)
