Tha
On my 555E Ford backhoe, I had a cable get tight on me and it became very difficult to lower the left side. I had to hold the right side at the bare minimum, and push the left side as hard as I could to get them to both go down at the same time.

I replaced the cable, which I bought from Messicks.com It's a horrible job to replace them, but doable. Then it's very tricky to get it adjusted just right. If it's too tight or loose, it doesn't work at all. You have to keep playing with it until you get it to the only place it will work properly.

I've done both cables now and hope that I never have to do it again!!!
Thanks I hope it’s not that

When I bought a used 4500 35 years ago and bought a work shop manual from Ford. $108. They shipped it to me. 7-8 books stacked about 12”. They were the best work shop manuals I’ve ever seen. Lots of pictures and diagrams with thoughtful text. Teaching as much as describing procedures. Actually enjoyed reading them. Sold it with the backhoe years ago. If you ever see one definitely worth getting.

Study the diagrams. Thinking it might be a mechanical linkage problem? How the linkage connects, orientation, direction of cotter pins makes a difference. Always good to take lots of pictures before any repair and during disassembly. So easy now with phones.

Great old iron built to last. Cleanest engine oil of any diesel I have ever owned.

Yes, I have all the manuals you’re right my mind is going. I forgot I had them. I’m gonna go pull them out today. My wife’s husband is an idiot.

Look at the picture. Top and bottom pivots
OK, I am getting ready to take the pivot rods out to check them out to see if the bushing is bad but first I’m looking to see if I can replace those pivot rods and or bushings. Where could I find those parts? I have tried Steiner Tractor no luck.

Ford use to be great support for their equipment. Dealerships closed, moved further rural and sold to New Holland. Not sure of their status now. Got some parts off eBay for the agricultural Fords. Fords and Massey Fergenson out sold John Deere 9 out of 10 in our neck of the woods. Now only own Kubota.

For things like linkages, bushings etc may need learn how to source, make or modify yourself. Few manufacturers ever made their own bearings, bushings or seals. Become a mechanic not just a part changer. Cut many bushing shims from old Chlox bottles and brass shim stock to keep older equipment running.

Messicks is good, but parts are expensive on old Fords. May be easier to make the shafts.
