Overheating 1610D

Happy 4th to all,

My 1610 just starting to overheat when it is worked hard or for long periods of use. The radiator internals look clean and I have flushed the radiator out and put stop leak in it. Still have the same problem. When the tractor gets warm after a hour or two, it blows the coolant/air out thru the coolant recovery can.

I dont know what to do next? Pull the radiator and have cleaned or is the head gasket leaking(thus pushing air into the coolant causing this problem)? I am thinking it is the head gasket leaking, but I dont see any white smoke or water in the oil.

It could be the radiator cap not holding enough pressure. You can have it checked, should hold about 11-15 psi. Also, check to see if the belt is tight. I flushed out the fins of the radiator from the engine side on my tractor. Didn't look that bad, but it washed a lot of dirt out.

1610 have no water pump right?? Its a thermosiphon I believe?

I would use radiator flush and follow the directions...Mine looked spotless but I cleaned it twice (with one bottle) and was amazed at the junk that came out. I also hosed (NOT PRESSURE washed!) from the back. you got to get the hose in there between the fins and around the shield on back. The other option is removing the radiator if you really want.

If you do have thermosiphon (no pump) make sure you just have distilled water in the system since antifreeze will really make the system not cool well due to decreased circulation. I bought mine with antifreeze and had the same problem within about 20 minutes even when not working the engine hard at all!! flushed and cleaned and added distilled water and no problems even with heavy load....OK I do have a "touch" of antifreexe for corrosion protection. I think the highest temp I have hit is about 210 degrees.

These are some options. I agree that the radiator cap is a very likely cause if you were cooloing well before and now overheat after cleaning the system.

Get it back to your dealer. If you use it again knowing it is overheating be prepared to accept the consequences. Air bubbles blown into the the reservoir from the cooling system is a classic head gasket failure symptom.

PS--antifreeze has nothing to do with the circulation in a unit that depends on thermosiphon. The critical factor is the ability of either liquid to dissipate heat, and water dissipates heat faster than glycol solution. And the 1610 does not rely on thermosiphon.

I wasn't trying to pass mis-information. The thermosiphon issue I said I was not aware of on the 1610.

My understanding was that the antifreeze does dissipate heat a bit slower just as you pointed out. And it was that very fact that decreased the temperature differential of the fluid in the cooling system. And the decreased temperature differential worsened the dissipation problem by slowing the circulation/flow rate. At least that is how I under stood the problem...I did not intend to pass bad info...sorry if I did. ANd I appreciate the knowledge you just added to me!! obviously this is not an issue with a pump!!!

On the head gasket leak issue....My brother-inlaw showed me a neat gizmo he used on my older Plymouth minivan to find that problem. He put a CO2 (I believe CO2 not CO) detector in place of the radiator cap. It changes color from yellow-to-blue or vice versa when the CO2 is detected. I was loosing coolant all the time but never had a drop on the ground. He verified the gasket problem, replaced it, and I am problem free today still. A similar device is used to verify breathing tube (endotracheal) postion in people on a ventilator....but I bet it costs more then!!

Your 1610 has a water pump. Check endplay by gently rocking fan blade back and forth for bearing wear. Radiator cap and belt tension is usually the culprit if water and radiator are clean.

The first thing you need to do is be sure that it is actually getting hot. Any local parts store will have a small mechanical thermometer that you can measure the temp. of the water going out into the overflow bottle (dont rely on the "idiot light" for this test) . This will give you the directrion you need to go. The tractor is designed to displace a certain amount of coolant into the bottle as the warm water expands and then suck it back up into the radiator when it cools. I can't tell by your description how much is being pushed out but, hopefully, your tractor is operating as designed or just needs a new cap as said before.

I am awaiting deliver of my Yanmar 1500D, to replace my 1956 Farmall F100 (anyone want to buy it??)
I have tried to read EVERY post about overheating Yanmar tractors, and I have reached the conclusion that Water Wetter is the way to go to cool the system, at least until cold weather sets in.
Now, cooling Yanmar tractors seems to be a thread on every page, but I am anxious to hear any comments, or from someone who has used WW in their tractor.
By the way, this is my first post......
