Radiator hoses disconnected, hose turned on in the radiator neck and let 'er flow.

The waterhose test is not always accurate. I had a YM2010 that over-heated after 2 hrs of mowing. I did the garden hose test. It flowed just fine but when I took it to the shop they said that 60% of the tubes were stopped up. I had to have a new core ($150) and then it ran cool.

Yeah, the home/hose test is more of a /nogo/ test.. if it does pass.. it may still have problems.. if it doesn't pass.. you know where to start..

Today on a coolish, starting to feel like fall day, I was mowing and my 1500 over heated again. So, with every intention of taking to radiator to the shop tomorrow, I pulled it out. What I found when I held it up to the sky was that a good number, 50 % of the passages through the radiator had mud in them which I could not appreciate when it was installed. I then pressure washed it out and got them all clean. I flushed the engine and I also did the hose test and there was no resistance to flow and water ran though easily. I decided to put it all back together. The air flow now sees much better, very subjective. After this if it over heats I wll take the radiator in to the shop. Thanks for all the advise.

Does anyone know anything about adding a water pump to a YM1500? About a year ago i saw, on Ebay, someone had made a plate to accept a water pump for the tractor. Of course the alternator had to be removed and a side mount alterntor was added. This would be a great option.

Yanmar designed these tractors to run continuous at full rated horsepower.

If now after 30 years it overheats at far less than continuous full load, I think your money is better spent restoring it to original specifications.

I would take the radiator to a local shop and get it rodded out or if its rotten, replace it.
