Overrun Clutch

There is a big distributor that has definite quality control problems on their quick disconnect clutches. We used to sell them & had lots of problems. Since we started getting them direct from a manufacturer where we could specify design changes like a deeper snap ring grove I don't think we have had a single problem.

One thing I did find while trying to figure out why some customers have repeat problems and others (like us with our shop tractors & own personal tractors) have had no problems for many years is that if the shaft is hard to telescope it can pull the clutches apart when the mower is raised or lowered. They are not designed for pressure in the in/out direction. Be sure your shaft slides in and out easily & is well greased. Also be sure that the shaft is not too long and bottoming out when the mower is raised.

Other than that, there are very few makers of the quick disconnect design. The pin on style seems to be more solid but much less convenient. I did see an Italian QD design several years ago but it was very expensive and I cant find them anymore.

Or has anyone used the ones from Hub City?

Hub City told me they used to manufacture their products in America.

Now they have the same parts made in Red China for a lot less, but they said retail prices haven't gone down as a result or lower manufacturing costs. So they are making a lot more off of each part sold, and eliminated hundreds of American jobs at the same time.

On flag day I wonder if they put a communist china flag up beside their American flags.. or maybe they burned their American flag altogether.

A few years ago I had the same problem and had to put C clips on the ones with springs I thought was to lose.has not happened in a long time, but check the spring before you install it. If it looks like it might slipe over the pin,put a C clip on it. tks Steve

for my information, what is an overrun clutch? I clicked on it, and read the description - I guess its to prevent inertia in the attachment from driving the PTO, but is it something that only small tractors need?

And would a slip clutch replace it?

Overrun clutches just prevent an implement from pushing a tractor when the clutch is engaged. Most newer tractors have live PTO and do not need overrun clutches.

A slip clutch prevents damage to your PTO gears from hitting a rock or stump - instead of trashing expensive parts, the slip clutch takes up the slack.

If I have this wrong please correct me!
