Overseeding, what is it?

I have heard people speak of overseeding and overseeding attachments. Whats is it all about?

Overseeding is applying grass seed over the existing lawn grass. Some grasses such as fescue, will thin out over time. Instead of replanting the entire yard, it can be overseeded. Most 3pt mounted overseeders either have small spikes (ie Woods) or have small blades (ie Landpride) that can scratch the surface to allow the seed to germinate better. For small yards, many people just spread the seed on the ground over the existing grass.

Many people overseed their lawns in the late fall with a grass which grows well in the winter such as winter rye, in addition to the aforementioned overseeding of the thin spots. I think that the over in overseeding just indicates that you are seeding <font color=blue>over</font color=blue> some existing grass, rather than on a bare, freshly prepared seedbed.
