Same here on the coat hangers. I've never compared cost of rod versus coat hangers, but for the minimal amount of gas welding I do, coat hangers work great.

My neighbor is a certified welder and he uses coat hangers too. I had a metal hydraulic line for my blade bend in half by a tree on my dozer. I cut it and cleaned up the edges, but had him weld it back together. He used a coat hanger. I don't know the preasure that line handles, but it doesn't leak at all.

Coat hangers when you run out of the copper coated rod and copper electrical wire when you run out of brazing rod. Don't remember the flux I used with the copper wire but it worked well in most cases. I once used gold rod when I gold flossed hydraulic lines when I worked for Southern Pacific when I was a kid.

either rod you have there will work nicely. You never know what kind of cheap metal is in a coat hanger, you are better off with real filler metal that has been rated unless you are welding 2 coat hangers together, then I would use a coat hanger as a filler.
