Packing a muffler, wire wool or wadding

The sound expands into the wadding and is muffled because the sound waves are changed.

The muffler that was on ot forced the sound to go into and through two chambers and the flow was restricted and impeded by baffles so that when the sound got to the tail pipe there wasn't much of it left.

Although the pipe is straight through, the sound will expand through the holes into the muffling padding and hopefully be subdued. Not too much though, I hope to just take the rasp out of it so it is loud but nice.

We'll see:D

The most effective, long-lasting mufflers that I've seen have no packing, but are made entirely of stainless steel. Instead of packing there are two separate pipes inside them, offset from each other, each welded to the end of the cannister blocking the exhaust gas, and forcing the exhaust to go out through holes drilled in the sides of the tube. One tube is the inlet, the other is the exhaust, and the muffler is essentially reversible -- it doesn't matter which tube is the inlet.
