Paint ????

I am using a Husky spray gun , pic is attached. Van Sickle Premium Implement Enamel, using Van Sickle hardener, thinning it 5-7% with naptha.

First coat went on great, recoated 5 hours later and got a slight Aligator skin to the surface. You have to be 2 feet or closer, I have seen some that has been visible from Florida. It appears about 5 minutes after the second coat is sprayed.

The finish does not have to be perfect, but I figure if I am going to spend the time and money on painting the items, then the finish should be "decent" and not look like a BLUE aligator. Otherwise I will let Mother Nature take its course and have a nice brown finish in a couple of years.

Three things to look at...

1) Is there previous paint on the items? If so, take a close look at the first coat & you may see the beginnings of your "Aligator skin" problems.

2) Read over the information of the can carefully. I've personally worked with paints listed as quick-dry that took 24 hours plus to cure enough for a second coat.

3) How thick are you applying the first coat. Too thick a coat can fool you into thinking it has fully hardened. Then, when you apply the second coat, the solvents get absorbed by the first coat & it softens up as the second hardens.


Just another thought...

I've never tried naptha as a thinner. Doesn't sound right to me. Could be the naptha is too strong a solvent for the cured paint. I use xylene as a general purpose degreaser & solvent at work. I believe it's comparable to naptha in strength. It'll turn week old paint into goo within minutes. If I used it as a thinner, I'd never think of spraying it over a previous coat.
