I'm just curious as to what you guys do as far as painting attachments; do you match the color to your brand of tractor or to the brand of the implement? For example... say you have a New Holland tractor and you pick up an old used JD... I don't know... say rear blade. Do you paint the blade green or blue?

I guess that depends on how much time you have on your hands. I would only paint something to prevent it from rusting. Ask me the same question after I retire, I may do it for a hobby.:D

I don't have a lot of time either or money for that matter...That's why half the stuff I obtain is about one step away from the scrap yard. After getting the thing in working condition again I like to preserve my investment of time by shooting a coat of paint on it..nothing fancy for me in that regard as well...I use a Wagner power painter and have at it...

I use primer or Rustoleam as required. This applies to the implements and FEL bucket. I've a few small rust areas on the tractor I'll be touching up with factory paint (or as close as I can get to it).
As far as matching my implements to the tractor? Nope...I'm not that color-coordinated.

I like to keep the pint as oem as it can be.. Helps when trying to ID things later on. My 'Blue' tractor has no problems with my 'green' mower.

In my way of thinking if the attachment is something that I made, then I have to paint it anyway, so it might as well be the color of the tractor, but if I buy an attachment then why not keep it original? Does not make much sense to me to redo something that does not help the performance or longevity and only costs money.

For what it's worth.

That has been my MO as well; if it's something I make I'll try to match my tractor; if it's something I've rebuilt and due to rust etc. it can use some paint, I'll try to match the original color of the attachment...

If I decide to paint an attachment, I try to match the color of the original. I've got nothing but RED tractors (Farmall's and Mahindra), picked up a Dearborn 10-8 2BtM plow. I didn't paint it RED because of the tractors, I painted it RED because that was the original color (Can't imagine a Dearborn plow painted green anyway.....). As far as color schemes I picked up a Farmall 140 ('74 model) a month or so ago. Dings, bent in hood (over engine) and 30+ years of garden use with little "cleaning". Here's a "before I bought it" and a "Just a couple of days ago" pictures. The paint is combo of IH Red and Rustoleum Red....

im going with OEM paint. IN the case of my rear blade, it was ford yellow... im makeing it landpride beige. (currently red primer... it will eventually wide up that color... to many other irons in the fire at the moment)

if its a generic BB or something ive significantly modified, ill default to tractor color... im my case blue.

I guess if I had the time I would try to match the colors if possible, sometimes it would be easier if you have several attachments just to have one color that way they are easier to touch up. None of my attachments are picture perfect by any means, they have some rust, scrapes, dents and such, but then again, most of us work em and thats what happens. At this point in time I may touch some up in the summer time, but its not top on my lists of things to do. If I see they are getting pretty rusty or something, then I will prime for the time being until I can find the time to paint them.

Any ol' paint'll do, so long as it's the original color, with the original decals. Both these plows are from the late 1950's. A really good second paint job may see them through 'till their 100th year. Did I mention I hate to paint?

If it's store bought type implement then whatever the origional color was.
I like blue so whatever I build it is painted blue, my tractor maybe orange but why do I need to paint what I build the color of the tractor.

Uh kwolfe, hate to disabuse you of the idea that you'll have more time when you retire. I have so many jobs on my prioity list that I wish I could retire so that I could find time to get to them all.

I worry less about the color and more about the quality and preparation. I have a snowblower that I'd like to repaint for corrosion resistance. Someone suggested POR-15. Anyone ever had success with that?

I haven't used that stuff yet, but I can pass this along: Whatever you use for your primer/rust restorer do yourself a favor and paint the inside of the auger and chute area with Slip-Plate. I did that a while ago to a garden tractor snowthrower and it worked great! In fact, I also use it under my lawn mower decks...

Every tractor has some black on it. It isn't always pretty, but when you're building from scratch or starting with junk, Rustoleum black provides protection and matches everything.

I just sand blasted my mower deck and have a quart of POR-15 sitting on the shelf ready to give it a go. I am going to top coat it with JD Yellow, as it was originally, and Slip Plate underneath. I'll let you know what I think of the POR-15 after I shoot it. Gotta wait for it to warm back up a little.
