The trade off would be to go back to horses and that is an unreasonable option.

Not unreasonable in my mind. I would be more than happy to follow this option!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Nice job Ozarker, I wonder why so many of the folks that are preaching it's OK to contaminate a little are doing so unregistered..............And then they want to get into name calling.............What exactly is a Treehugger?

I don't believe I have ever seen a team of horses with a FEL.

Lots of Amish in my area who use horses......................

TreeHugger is a term applied to rabid enviromentalists, the type that think we should all go back to living in caves so as not to disturb nature.

Yeah,
Like that retarted broad that stayed up in the tree in California for about 2 years ,so they would not cut it down. The radical groups called Earth first that drives spikes into trees,so they will destroy the saw blades of a hardworking guy in a saw mill trying to make an honest living, instead of out there like some drugged out idiot trying to stop a timber truck from making a delivery.

This goes back to the needed / unneeded thing. Some pollution is a trade off... if we didn't use grease, we would need a new tractor every year... or more often... but oiling up the pasture can easilly be avoided.

Soundguy

<font color=blue>has anyone thought of the fact that we all grease our tractors. to pump in grease in every little fitting obviosly the old stuff must come out or we would never need to grease them would we. it just comes out slowly and drips every so often, think of how many grease cartriges you go thru in a year, i would think it is more than a bit of oil that might wipe off a manure spreader.

case/point. Anyone used the new sealed bearing disc's that TSC and others sell..... I've seen some on the local NH dealers lot too.. Now there was a good idea... get rid of the grey iron bearings that have to be greased every 10 seconds, and go with a sealed bearing...

Soundguy

<font color=blue>"Yes, that has been thought of. Most automotive applications have gone to permanently sealed joints to reduce that type of contamination on the roads. Not sure why tractor MFG's don't do the same but there are some areas that will always require greasing."

This is not aimed at you, Chris, it's just a convenient place to jump in. :) You wouldn't want to drop any oil at all on the ground because it might mix with all the artificial fertilizer and weed poison you've used, you know, the stuff that is perfectly legal and safe this year but next year will be declared dangerous and a threat to modern civilization. The manure you're spreading might also wash into a creek or river and pollute it or soak in and contaminate your ground water as I've heard has happened around a lot of farming operations but, [censored], s%^t is a natural fertilizer! You could build the floor out of CCA treated wood but as the wood wears away you're dropping stuff that is probably worse than the oil. Would redwood hold up? As long as some eco-terrorist doesn't find out about it and burn your turd hearse because the trees might have come from an old growth forest. Being that your screwed if you do or screwed if you don't I'd soak it with the used oil and if anybody asks tell 'em it came like that and you don't know what the he11 it has on it!
