I have been looking for a yanmar but was turned onto a Mitsubishi MT16D today, does anyone know if the gray mitsubishis are easier to get parts for and if, unlike the gray yanmars, actual shop/operators manuals are available for them, or are only parts lists available? How bout for the MT16D since it is a newer production gray model?

Trentay,
You might be asking your questions in the wrong place. We are Yanmar enthusiasts. Kind of like asking Chevy guys about Ford. We think Yanmar built the best, most economical compact tractors. Yeah the early John Deere compacts were pretty good. It is our belief that one reason that Yanmars are best is that they have the best parts availability. Don't forget about the excellent network of small independent Yanmar dealers. The english operation manual and shop manual for a very similar US model works very well for most of us. If you want the scoop on Mitsubishi you might do better to go to some Mitsubishi guys.

I'm a Yanmar & Mitsubishi dealer. Yanmar manual & parts are easier to get & cheaper. The grey market tractors don't have English manuals. You have to get something close. The newer ones are harder to get info on , but I can get parts pages faxed from Japan.

Thanks Len, that is what I was trying to find out. I am really more intested in the Yanmar, however I saw the Mits and was curious, somewhere sombody said the Mits was easier to get parts for so I had to ask the question.

Chris, sorry about this post on this forum, however I thought the spirit of this thing was to help each other not slam each other. I am a Yanmar enthusiast and thought that others might be be able to answer my question here. If you did not notice, there is no Mits discussion forum at TBN, so I thought it best to ask others like myself who are Yanmar fans because they usually have experience with all gray market tractors and are some of the most knowlegeable and helpful people I have ever seen on a forum!!!!

I really don't think Chris was slamming you, but it probably would be hard to get a good response from the Yanmar owners. Unless we happen to be dealers/parts suppliers also, it would be hard to give you an honest answer here.

I'd be curious to hear more about the Mits. 20+ years ago when I was looking for my first compact tractor I saw some Mits and was impressed by their fit and finish. I never did operate one and know nothing about them. At that time Mit had sold some in this country but no dealer network ever developed in my part of the country. I prefer the Yanmar because of the owner enthusiasm and because of the parts availability.....one sort of leads to the other. But a nice Mits wouldn't scare me if I was on a budget that wouldn't allow the Yanmar. Hmmm...I should admit my bias: I LIKE to take things apart, and am always interested in mechanical innards.

Roger,

I don't know, I have had my heart set on a 1401D yanny, but saw this Mits MT16D and it is a pretty good deal. I was told by others that the Mits were easier to get parts for and were really well made, so I am still thinking about it. I recently checked out and ran a Mits MTE2000 which is about 23hp and it was pretty smooth but quite expensive. Apparently Yanmars are not as popular in my area as I have seen very few! The closest gray dealer to me told me that he had one Yanmar that he floored and nobody would buy it so he traded it to another dealer in another area. I am going to look at a YM1500D tomorrow that is for sale in the paper.

I have been involved with grey markets for the past 5 years and and have had a handful of Mitsubishis. I have successful gotten parts when they were needed, but from my experience there are less suppliers and less enthusiasm for the Mitsubishi and the other grey brands than there are for the Yanmars. When I first started importers where still bringing in the grey market Kubotas and people were turning their noses up at the Yanmars. The Yanmar reputation took hold with the help of John Deere's reputation and once the Kubotas were no longer legal to import the Yanmars took a solid lead in grey market popularity. To me all the Japanese greys are of high quality. Personal preference plays a big part in the purchase. What tractor feels right to you? Does this dealer know what they talking about? If you need a part where will you get it? Ask the seller and see if they know. I frequent a number of tractor bulletin boards and it amazes me at the number of people that are asking what air, oil, or fuel filter fits their tractor. Did the dealer not tell them? Could they tell them? Whatever tractor you buy, the person that sells it to you should be one of the deciding factors. Sorry to be so long.
