That is the "classic" failure of a multi strand cable when the termination does not pivot.
The termination acts as a lever bending the cable back and forth right at the trasition between cable and termination.
The pivot needs LUBE! and a cover to hold the lube in and keep the dirt out
In the photo, The rust is evident,
You don't have a cable problem, you have a lubrication problem.
