Larry,

You have a good eye for detail. I've mostly completed the waterers now and I'll post some finish pics as soon as I can get around to it. I didn't get the action shots like I wanted because I was the only one working and no one was around to take my picture. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

To answer your question, I've now spread 10" of gravel all around the tanks. It's low enough now that my german shepherd can drink out of them. Before I spread the gravel, I laid out 8' of filter cloth on all 4 sides of the tanks to cut off any growth of grass, weeds, etc. The purpose of spreading the crush and run gravel around the tanks (other than to raise the finish grade) is to prevent the watering areas from becoming muddy, slippery messes where cows could possibly slip and as you mentioned, even fall in. As far as what happens if a critter does fall in, I'm not sure about that one. /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif I'll post the measurements of the tanks when I post some more pics.

Chris,

Jezebelle sounds very much like one of my black baldys, Millie. She just HAS to be in the middle of WHATEVER is going on. I swear she's more curious, and more mischievous than a cat! She gets out whenever she wants to, and I don't even bother rounding her up anymore. SHE decides when she's finished being bad, and lets herself back in the pasture. (She's actually my favorite, and best-looking cow)

Would you mind posting a picture of your watering tanks? I'd like to see yours just for comparsion sake.

On advice from an old farmer, we purposely put fish in ours. In our case, it is a few gold fish.. they were the .10 cent 'comets' that most stores sell as feeder fish. As goldfish are carps.. we now have fish that are like shiners...
The keep the algea in check.. which is a big problem here in florida.
Have never had a problem with them.. havn't lost a fish in 2 years that I know of either...

"This summer may find me plunging in one of these tanks to cool off! I even seen some tanks that had a few fish in them. "

Sure. Next time i make it out to my back pasture, I'll post one of the oblong tanks I've drained to move.

I'll see if I can get one of the cow to pose as well.

I tried that once. All it seemed to do was feed the frogs! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
Within a week they where gone and all I had was a bunch of fat frogs!

Most of the frogs we have arout here.. are more what I would call toads..... they don't go in the water much.. but hadn't thought of that.... Perhaps our cats keep them in check? ( We have quite a few barn cats on patrol... don't know if they catch frogs though?

Hell.. you could scar them.... catch a medium sige larg mouth bass and put it in ther, and see what happens to the frogs..
;-)

outstanding job, fresh water that you don't have to fill!! Nice to have a setup where you can do that.

Ok, here is a picture of those oblong water tanks I use. I had this one in the back of my pasture, but have disconnected it durin ghte winter for relocation ( and cleaning!) I don't like to put them out in the complete open.. but this one was just to remotely located in the trees.
anyway.. here is the first of three pics.
