kerr,
I wish someone would event a rotary mower that chips w/a blower, that way chips etc..can be blown back into the woods or a trailer.

For now the armstrong rake and armstrong hand picker seems the best. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I use a landscaping rake to clean up loos brush & branches. I bought mine (KingKutter brand?) a Quality Farm & Fleet. You have to be careful that you don't let it dig in too much or it will take your grass out also. I'm going to be seeding my area next so tearing out the the weeds wasn't a concern for me. Keeping it in float position helps with that. Something like this may help you.

Like Shade2u2, I just got a landscape rake (Linebach) and this was one of my primary purposes. Yes, it will tend to take out or at least "rough up" your pasture and I certainly wouldn't use it if my area was golf greens or even fairways. But I'm using it early in the grass growing season to clean up the winter limbs, twigs, etc and I figure that any damaged area will quickly fill in when the grass gets going good.

A guage wheel on the rake would probably help but they cost almost half what the rake cost so I put off buying them.

I agree with all of the rest. A 3-point hitch landscape rake will do the job but leave gouges in the grass. This should not be a problem for pasture or other rough lawn areas.

They typically cost in the $250-$350 range. Some rental companies rent them out. I rented a 6' model for about $25 a day if I remember correctly. Then that particular rental company sold off their 3-point hitch equipment and I bought it $75. At the time I thought that it was handy but not worth over $150 to have one. Now I place a higher value on their usage.

For sure get a rake with 2 guage wheels to keep each side (for unlevel ground) from tilting in.

It's hard though to set the wheels light enough to rake branches without dropping them now and then over low spots. If you don't mind dropping a few set it light, if you want all of them no matter what, set the wheels so it has more "dig".

What might work better, as a landscape (rock) rake fills up quickly, is the old style hay rakes which I haven't seen in a long time. My first tractor ride was sitting on the seat of a hay rake behind my grandfathers tractor in Missouri at age 4-5? I've carried that memory (or what I remember that I used to remember) for 45 years. It's also about my oldest memory of ANYTHING. It's funny how life is, here it is so many years later and I'm STILL THINKING OF A TRACTOR RAKE, mine or grandfathers!

PS, for light jobs where the branches are light and scattered, I just put the forks on the L35 or the BX and wife or daughter drape them over the forks until a get a huge pile.

That's the ticket. That's known as a dump rake in these parts. Meant for horses (as in one or two) so don't overpower it.

del,
Would that have been an dump hay rake or side deliver hay rake.
Indeed those memories turn out to be the ones we cherish..

Sorry to say I can't remember even what color the tractor was, only that bare metal seat and this 3-4 foot high rake tines. My question to this group would be: What is the backwards facing seat on the rake actually for?

My opinion would be to use the mower under for branches under an inch or one of those 4in1 buckets sure would be fun for anything bigger. Campfire for the grandkids anyone? Seems there was a post about pinecone cleanup. SteveV

del,
I have no idea why someone would put a seat on backwards for...how would that one drive a team of horses & oxen's than during the operation.

The seat is not on backwards! the way the seat is facing is the direction that the rake was pulled. you looked the horses square in the ?? horsy keep your tail up, keep the sunshine out of my eyes!!

I have the same situation where I need to rake up limbs and rocks. I looked at the $325 Howse rock rakes (landscape rake) and thought they were too light for the rocky soil, so I bought a $395 Dale Phillips rake. If I turn it backwards and backup I can push a pile of brush and limbs higher than my 3710. Forward, it's great for rocks and smaller debris. It marks the soil a little, so it may not be as good for a finished lawn, but it's great for my fields.
