Agree Egon. Alfalfa is usually harder to get to grow than grass is. If you're looking for a one year cover crop to go with your grass just plant oats with your grass seed.

Rye is indeed a good (and temporary) cover for whatever you intend to grow (in my case, Bahia). A rake might just be the ticket - won't dig more than 1/2 inch in firm soil, yet should rough things up enough for the seed to take.

Cisco, By rake, do you mean a landscape rake? Have a pasture to renovate also. There is so much good information on this site.
