Hmmm.....Exploding pavers, must have firebrick etc......This went a little overly dramatic in my opinion. I'm not too worried. I had a paver firepit at my previous residence. Have had some rip roaring fires and never a problem.

That's been my experience also for the last 10 years or so.

I'd be concerned with the heat breaking down the pavers too, but seeing bigtiller's 10 year old setup, they seem pretty durable and looks nice too.

That pic was when it was new and never had a fire. The bricks now are red on the inside and have a lot of little cracks on them, but I never had one blow apart.

I used the castle style retaining wall blocks for my firepit and in five years probably 30% of them have split completely in half but I have some pretty big fires. I burn stumps and what not and my pit is probably 12' in diameter and usually full when I light it. I'd never thought about them exploding; just upset that they break but they are cheap enough to replace.

I have had natural stone (granite) around a fire pit throw off shrapnel with a loud snap. It happened with the first few hot fires, then I guess the stresses in the rock are relived and it doesn't explode after that, although it will shed an outer layer of stone now and then. I would expect pavers to just crumble away over time like concrete blocks will.

I built one similar to ones OP did and mine lasted about 2 seasons till half of the blocks are cracked thru & thru with insides flaking off bad. (BRICK) or fire brick lining will help I'm told, mine replaced a block one that lasted 7 or 8 years... The pavers I used were the BIG ones not the small or medium ones. They probably would have lasted a few seasons longer except I made syrup on it which burnt long and HOT for 8 hrs a day couple times a week for month of February/March with wet/cold cycles... If I only burnt a regular fire they would probably lasted longer. I had ONE which blew out a corner pretty good after it had rained the day prior & was soaked when I made a fast hot fire. Steam type explosion did that block in pretty good. I also made a rectangle BBQ pit top for it and cooked for family get-togethers on it a few times which lasted fire from noonish till late (Lunch Dinner and beer drinking time.) It is about 7 yrs old now and pretty much every block is cracked in two with a few crumbling & would not last thru a syrup cooking season again. It has not been fired now in about 3 years but is still level & full of wood should I feel the need lol...
