Pellet air rifle suggestions?

The trigger on my Gamo is excellent, it feels better than some "real" guns. Maybe it isn't typical, never fired another Gamo.

BTW Benjamin is owned by Crosman so I doubt there is a "Benjamin Corporate" office anymore...the Crosman.com website lists dealers for both.
BTW Crosman also "owns" the Sheridan, Remington and Winchester airgun brands;)

Glad you've had a good experience with your Gamo trigger. I'm not sure which model you have, but the ones I've owned and shot have been a bit rough. I must admit, I've become a bit of an airgun snob over the years and probably have different expectations for trigger performance than most users.

You're right about benjamin being owned by Crosman...he will need to call Crosman customer service.

So I was reading up on air rifles and see that in the break barrel types there seem to be at least two different mechanisms for the piston. One reads as a spring piston while the other is a gas piston. Is that one of the break points separating the higher end guns from the lower end?

Chuck

The spring piston will move the gun as it moves within, decreasing accuracy. You will only get one of those to group so well and then you need to add weight.
That's the only problem with the cheaper chinese airguns. You just can't get them to really "drive a tack".

I do have one neighbor who is a... shall we say "a piece of work" so I am leaning towards a rifle that has some sort of silencer/muffler on it.

Be advised! There is a season on squirrells in some/most states and it may be illegal to shoot them in the one you are living in when the season is closed.
I'm telling you this so you are aware that your neighbor may be the type to call Fish and Game if he's a squirrell lover. He may be the reason you have so many.
Get rid of them after you shoot them. I've got recipies:licking:

Yup, neighbor is a divorced, bitter, man hating woman who gets up on the wrong side of the bed every day. She wouldn't hesitate to call the F&G warden. I will check to see if there is a season for squirrels here.

Can the PCP rifles be filled from an air compressor? I noted the air fitting on the rifles looks similar.

How many shots can you get from, say, the .22cal Marauder before a refill is necessary?

Correct, I have never used one. Don't have the need or inclination to spend that much money on an air rifle. You must live in a neighbohood. My closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away and couldn't care less what I'm shooting.

Ok so that's great for you. Lucky you can shoot whatever rifle you want in the backwoods that you live. But some of us live in nice neighborhoods where you can't fire a rifle, and these high end air rifles really come in handy. Whether or not the $550 is too much for you or whomever to afford, well that's up to each individual. I am just answering the OP's original question about what AIR RIFLE to buy. If what mine costs offends you, well I truly feel bad for you. Comment on what you have experience with and let others comment on the rest. Sorry to everyone else.

PCP airguns need 3000 to 4000 psi. So your garage compressor is inadequate.

Pyramydair has some compressors, they are in the $3-4000 range but I think you can fill scuba tanks with them also. I seem to remember reading about someone coming out with a $800 compressor dedicated to airguns, perhaps on one of the forums or maybe it was on American Airgunner.

Most PCP guns work best with about 2800 psi as a starting pressure. The gun has a built in air cylinder that has to be recharged after so many shots has depleted them. The number of shots you can get before your accuracy starts to suffer and your power drops off depends upon the make and the caliber. Typically, most guns get about 30-50 consistent shots, however there are many with larger cylinders that can shoot over upwards of 150.

The marauder is unique in that it can use compressed air OR CO2. CO2 is typically 2000 psi, so the gun has to be adjusted to operate at this lower pressure. Regarding marauder shot count, I think most would say you can get about 30 shots of similar consistency. The answer to this question depends upon how consistent you want the gun to shoot and how much change in velocity you decide is acceptable. Some folks get 50 shots out of them and are happy.
