Robert, I thank you for the info and didn't realize that the feed was that reasonable. I mean I pay 9.50/ 100lb of whole corn so I would be very interested in the feed that you get. Is this something that has to be bought in major bulk and is it special stock that not to many stores stock? Hmmm I think I need to find out about this stuff.

Our feed is custom mixed by Giers Agway. We can order 5000lbs or 500lbs. The price is usually the same but sometimes it is $10 per 100lbs depending on time of year and how much they have to pay for ingredients. We were paying $6 per 100lbs for whole corn as we give a handful of kernals to our deer as a treat every now and then. I will get our feed formula and post it so that you can print it and show it to your local dealer and have it mixed as well or at least find out how much they will charge to mix it.

Has anyone seen a feeder made of drain pipe? 6 or 8" vertical piece with a y shaped piece on the botton. Another question should a feeding program be started early in the fall? Any problem with starting now? *L* as I type this my wife is hollaring about a moose in the back yard, nice bull, he looks nice and healthy.

That BIG FELLOW would be really peased if you planted lots of willows. He will even trim them at a nice proper hight.

No. They seem to think their products contain gold in them. I can not believe how many people buy their seed for what they charge:-( In most cases it is because the consumer doesn't know any better. I am lucky, I am in the National Wild Turkey Federation and they have a program where they pay for half the cost of the seed and we pay the other half. Each member is entiled up to 4 bags. We have 3 members in our family so we can get 12 bags a year if we wanted. The seed comes out to about $40 for 20-25lbs which is a lot better then the $9 for 1-2 lb. Understanding what the deer need and what they will eat will help anyone wanting to plant their own feed plots. In most cases you can buy the seed at your ag store in bulk to save money. Each area is different and the NWTF has seed designed for different areas. As far as feeds, Penn State switched to Purina feed about 2-3 years ago as part of a study they were doing. We are planning on heading down there again later this year to see how that study is going. Purina doesn't tell us what % of everything is in their feed and we prefer to know what we are giving our deer so we have not tried their feed yet. Plus the cost is a lot more then what we pay currently and if we want to up the protein level all we have to do is make a phone call. With Purina, we feed what they would give us so it is a gamble. We have thought about doing our own trial with a couple pens on Purina and the rest on our normal feed to see if we can notice any difference in the deers body size or antler development.

hey Robert,

Whoa....... 18% protein........that stuff sure is hot!! Anything over 10-12% is wasted for me

I'm a little surprised at your calcium to phosphourus levels 2:1 up to 4:1. Do you not have brittle bone problems with your breeding stock animals? I use a 1:2 ratio myself.

No problems with any of our animals. All of them are extremly healthy and like I said before. This is based off of Penn States formula that they used about 4 years ago. As for the protein level, Whitetails need around 16% some more some less. Also, any more protein then they need they will just pass thru their system. We run 18% just to be sure they get enough. The cost difference between 18 and 16 is just a few cent's per 100. Take care.
