Penn State Sanctions resulting from the Sandusky scandal

While there are few things in this world that I care less about than sports, the one thing that caught my attention in this is the revisionist history aspect. Going back years and changing the scores of all the games they were in shouldn't be allowed.
Imagine if some race driver did something bad so some group decided to alter the outcome of every race they participated in. While it's true for the most part that history is written by the victors, it shouldn't be selectively edited like a Wiki page just because some pinko reality-dodging idiot who doesn't believe in keeping scores or rewarding achievement because someone might be offended or have their feelings hurt.

Roy, I agree with you 100%. It almost seems like they are trying to destroy the football program. So they ought to just stop it. I also do not agree with the accusation against a person that is not around to defend himself. It is very conveniant to pass the buck onto someone who can not talk. Also, I am sure it was money that stirred the cover up, not the football team reputation.

On another note, I do not watch NFL football due to their rediculous salaries. I did watch college though. Now college just seems like a big money making sport now anyhow.

I also do not believe in removing statues and renaming building. Paterno did a lot for that school and programm weather anyone like it or not and his work should be recongnized, not destroyed because of another mans actions. I also believe the board and powers at be knew more then what they are admitting.

I think this is an easy off. I would have ordered the stadium torn down. The football program banned forever. I would have seized ALL Pen State assets and awarded them to the kids. Then I would exhume Joe Paterno and hung the body from the crane while the stadium was being destroyed.

I believe they were right on. Punishment and deterrent for others.

Tough, but not for such a henious crime.

They have to pay up and put this behind them in order to move on. This is one of the many steps in that direction. I believe the school protected the institutuion rather than the innocent lives it destroyed. I am happy its now on national radar as there seems to be more molestation in the Pennsylvania hills than anywhere I have ever lived, and very little has ever been done about it.
I do feel for the current players that are caught up in it,as many have a chance to advance their sports career. I am sure they would have went elsewhere rather than sitting on a bench.

I'd be fine with all colleges dropping their sports programs and definitely sports scholarships. I think they're a waste of money and more importantly, good students may not be able to attend due to "atheletes" being recruited to win games (education being a secondary priority).

However, 60 million is a LOT of money. Paterno may or may not have made mistakes with Sandusky (I'm taking Louis Freeh's report with a huge grain of salt, since Paterno cannot rebute it...how convenient). The vacating of wins and the loss of bowl games for the next 4 years...is that fair to the players? I don't think so...

At this point, I'm thinking PSU would be best served by just dropping football from their agenda completely...put those funds elsewhere.

What do you folks think?

Roy,

The football program at most colleges pay their own way plus some. Money for scholarships, uniforms, travel expense and coaches salaries come from revenue generated by TV contracts, gate and merchandise sales. If you drop the football program that 30 million or whatever their revenue is goes away. And depending on the conference you are in - if you drop a sport, you are out of the conference.

I am biased, as my son is playing D2 football on a scholarship. But I don't feel that sports scholarships are a waste if money, nor do I appreciate your implying that my son is not a good student because he is an athlete.

I am sickened by what transpired at Penn State. I don't know if I agree with the severity of the punishment, because it does effect current players who are innocent. But, those players can always transfer to another institution I suppose. I know I would want out of there after this happened.

It's not just Penn State, happens often when football or other sport programs are placed at a higher level than they should be. Our local James Madison University is always having a bunch of problems and people look the other way. I agree thses programs bring big dollars to the table but at a huge cost. Most valuable players earn a education on how to cheat and rules are for other people. Our head football coach (Mickey Mathews) hired his two time DWI son (wheelchair - last DWI almost killed him) to be an assstant coach with a big paycheck. Most kids with a record like his couldn't get a job at a call center. Huge new stadium with sky box seating for the affullent.

several things that many around the country do not know because they only got what the big national news people wanted them to hear. First when the story broke about 1 victim within 12 hours the lawyers were advertizing for any other victims to come forward if they had had any contact with sandusky. Suddenly they started remembering from decades ago but funny they only remembered after the promise of huge amounts of money and only after coaching from the lawyers. Now the players must have also been guilty along with the cheerleaders and the band. Why not arrest all the past and present players cheer leaders and band members strip them of their degrees put them in jail and allow the lawyers to sue them also. I bet they could find more victims. Funny how the directors that hired the investigator none of them had any knowledge. Oh do not forget the season ticket holders they probably were guilty also now we can advertize nationwide for victims bet we can find more.

INteresting viewpoint from a vet I found on the statue:
To Rodney Erickson, and the rest of the Penn State Nation, I hope that this status goes viral so you will someday read it. I am a Wounded Warrior, wounded in combat by a gunshot wound through my pelvis. I have never asked, or tried to hide my scars or have them removed. Why? Because they are reminders of who I am and what I've done. All those things I've done may not have been good, but I am man enough to accept and face that. You should be man enough to face your past. We do not remove the Lincoln Memorial because he started the Civil War, rather we leave it as a reminder of the good he's done. To some, the statute may remind them of the Sandusky Child Molestations, and I understand that. However, how are you to move forward in this life if you do not know where you've been? We study history to remind us to not allow it to repeat itself. Some have said that no man, coach, or player is bigger than the school. I disagree, because all the administr...ation has done is prove that Joe Paterno was Penn State. Joe Pa lived for the school, and had the backbone to stare adversity in the eyes, and was able to put blinders on to ignore what the media and speculators said, to do what was needed. Even until the day he passed away, Coach Paterno lived with gracious integrity and still to this day, has been the only staff member to admit he was wrong. And if this status goes viral, all I ask is that the school be punished through a conventional process, not the court of public opinion. I also ask that ESPN give a sincere and public apology for dragging the school, Joe Pa, the victims, and the fans, alumni, and families of Penn State through the dirt by giving an unfair and completely biased, opinionated report. Much like my scars will always make me who I am, Joe Paterno will forever be Penn State.
