Penn State Sanctions resulting from the Sandusky scandal

I agree those who covered up the Sandusky affair should be prosecuted to the extent the law allows. Those convicted will become "radioactive" and never work again. This sordid affair should not, however, diminish the accomplishments of Coach Paterno and the Penn State Football Teams. The erasure of their football record smacks of petty vindictiveness.

several things that many around the country do not know because they only got what the big national news people wanted them to hear. First when the story broke about 1 victim within 12 hours the lawyers were advertizing for any other victims to come forward if they had had any contact with sandusky. Suddenly they started remembering from decades ago but funny they only remembered after the promise of huge amounts of money and only after coaching from the lawyers.

Some small number of people who have come out of the wood work might be lying but I doubt it. The rape victims were little boys who were told by a powerful figure that if they told what had happened to them nobody would believe them. Which is exactly what happened to the kids who reported the rape. Pedophiles groom their victims which is exactly what Sandusky was doing. Part of the grooming is to indoctrinate the kid that nobody will believe them if the victim tells.

The organization Sandusky setup gave him perfect hunting ground for his next victim. Pedophiles look for kids who do not have a decent family structure. They look for kids who have absent parent(s), parent(s) that are drug users, parent(s) that might have to work and leave the kids alone. Pedophiles look for the kids without many friends. Why? Because they "befriend" the vulnerable child which allows them to be groomed for what the pedophile wants. Sandusky's charity was a perfect setup for him to have access to vulnerable kids. It was a pedophiles dream come true.

Who would believe one of Sandusky's victims if they even wanted to make charges? Sandusky told his victims that nobody would believe them if they told. This is standard pedophile practice. Who would believe some "underprivileged" kid vs a PA football coach, a family man, an upstanding member of the community and a real nice guy who created a wonderful charity?

Which rape victim wants to admit they were raped? Especially a boy who know is a man? But if the victim finds out that they were NOT the only victim, that they were not alone, and maybe now someone will believe them which gives them courage to step forward.

It is sickening that the system failed these kids for so many years. It is not clear to me that Paterno and the administration violated the law at a state level. One thing that is for sure is that these kids did not get justice when they were children. The administrators who protected a child rapist might not get jail time for their actions but the kids might be able to punish them in civil courts.

Later,
Dan

I'm bothered by the vindictive nature of the responses I see... and the callous disregard for what the total impact of any vengeful action against the school could be. Lots of people in the University were complicit in unspeakable crimes and Paterno may have been one of them. Time and legal testimony may eventually prove what is suspected. They should suffer legal and financial repercussions.

Had PSU received the "death penalty", banned from football for a year or five... most commentators focus totally on how they think it's grand punishment for the administrators etc who allowed it to happen.

But more than pride is built around that program. State College PA is a real live town with real live humans who don't work for the university but who actually depend on it by virtue of their regular jobs. I would bet many of the towns retail establishments would cite football weekends as a major part of their annual revenue, enough that if you killed that program for even a year more than one person who doesn't work for the university would lose their job. And this would be a person who never had anything to do with the crime and whose only connection is living in the same county.

Is it just to punish them as well? I think not.

Punishment must fit the crime, but punishment that goes beyond the crime and harms the innocent is a crime itself.

all some kid has to do is accuse a teacher of touching them no proof necessary the teacher is ruined for life even when the kid is proved to be a liar. plain and simple murders get a fair trail if accused of molestation you are guilty for life

Not arguing with you, but let's not forget Sandusky was found guilty by a jury of his peers with lots of evidence.

Banned from football for one year, return the statue in 5 to 10. Fire the entire football staff, no pension.
I am not a huge football fan, but it is very central to the student body. SMU was banned for I think a year back in the late 80's it clipped their wings.

Didn't go far enough.

When a child can't be safe among professionals at a place of higher education, that place needs to go.

By not applying the death penalty, the NCAA has allowed football to remain functioning at Penn State so that administrative people could keep their jobs and businesses could try to survive. Penn State will not be a strong football power for many years and everyone must pay a little. Too bad Joe P was such a jerk.
