It wouldn't matter what side you put the screwsplitter on... you can put the trans in reverse as easy as forward. However, a manual trans is needed... an auto might not work out so well, would gain too much speed at idle and come to a stop under a load. And I dont want someone hittin the gas pedal while I was splittin wood, I don't care who they are! Now, with a few pullys and some cable to allow a hand throttle for the operator, and a remote kill switch...
Actually, we used ours on a 70's era Dodge Tradesman van with a 318 engine and automatic tranny. It's what we had. Looking back, it's likely one of us had to go up front and step on the gas to get it through the real heavy stuff. It's a wonder we never got injured working around that sort of stuff, but Dad really made sure we respected the equipment. The guy in the video seemed rather careless to me. I wouldn't be surprised if he impales himself on that thing one of these days.

Used one on a 3 pt hitch/PTO back in the early 80's. ONCE. It worked, would split just about anything, scared the daylights out of me. Used a splitting maul for the next 20 years until I got a hydraulic splitter.

Respecting the equipment (or lack thereof) is the basis of most injuries. Carelessness is also a major factor. Work smarter not harder... I have used meny work methods over the years that would be dangerous in others opinions but a healthy dose of respect and caution has kept me alive and uninjured. The times I have gotten hurt have been the result of my own stupidity. (Captain Morgan and an ATV helped me break my jaw 10 years ago, for example)

Be safe out there... I need to go clean the horse stalls now... gonna think about loading that 24' ash log that needs sawn while I do it. Anybody wanna loan me that truck in the OP?

Capt. Morgan and John Barleycorn have helped a lot of guys into the hospital or worse.
