I recently tore down an old concrete block building on some property I have. Didn't feel like hauling loads of concrete blocks off or renting a roll off dumpster to throw them in, so I did something really stupid.....I put a free add on Craigslist. Boy was that a mistake! Phone constantly rang off the hook but I finally got all of them gone, I'll never do that again though!

Anyways I had an old old burn barrel on the property. Like 30 years old. I used it to burn trash in sometimes, nothing major just small stuff. I noticed it was gone after I had a guy contact me about the bricks. Funny because it was just there the day before and has been on the property for 2 years without problem. I had no absolute proof he stole it but I had a suspicion. So I text him "hey I found a $100 bill on the ground and thought it was yours, maybe you dropped it?" He relied back "yeah! I'll come get it right now!" He pulls up and I noticed on the back of his truck there sits my burn barrel. He says something about the $100 and I said "who told you to remove the burn barrel?"(it also had some trash in it that he dumped out on the ground before stealing it). He tried to tell me it was his and he had it a long time, too bad I just so happen to have a pic on my phone proving it was mine.

Long story short, I told him to unload all of the bricks he got as well as the barrel or else I'm calling the cops for him trespassing right now.

Never mess with craigslist, it's too shady.

Yes, they will steal anything ! There is a 48 1 Ton Chevy Truck that has parts that will fit my 49 - I was given permission to use parts from the 48 for my 49.
I had the 48 up on blocks and since it is on a slight slope down, I put a chain around the frame to a tree to keep it from sliding off the blocks. Someone stole the chain I had holding it to the tree !
They also tipped over an old Snapper and stole the front wheels.

Around here, just leave it on the curb and it will disappear faster then you can can imagine. I put an old window unit on the curb for a client, went inside to tell him it was there, and by the time we got to the door so I could show it to him sitting there, it was gone. I bet it was less then two minutes before it was gone!!!!

I've been on several jobs where clients put signs on something saying it's free and it was gone before morning. One time it was a 6 foot wood fence in front of their house. Left there around 5pm, and it was gone before I got back there in the morning!!!

I like to look at Craigslist and I buy from people on there from time to time, same as Facebook groups, but I don't feel comfortable ever posting anything for sale. I'd rather leave it on the curb, or give it to Good Will and get a tax right off.

Our city has a Craigslist meet up place in the police parking lot for safety. The problem with getting rid of junk is you don't want to haul it. Them coming to get it is the point!

Best to get a number and do it through text and keep a watch on things. Or move it to a vacant lot next door or whatever and let them go there.

Sad when you can't even give stuff away.

Just had a guy tell me he actually: 1) thought the CL employment ad was genuine, 2) thought the (forged) check (watermarked) was authentic, and 3) thought that sending back $2500 from a $4k check within days was part of doing a 'different job' than he applied for over the interweb. :scratchchin:

His CU caught on quicker than he did and is faced with giving him a(nother) loan for the $2.5k ... threatened police action as though he was in on a scam that still finds a victim now and then. btw, the CU traced the $$ to Malaysia. "g'bye!"

Craig's List. A 'dark web' for everyone.

We had a 'freecycle' locally, might still be going on, so friends put bagged baby clothes in the carport for pickup. We had just ground up two deer for the freezer and left grinder parts on the barbie grill and forgot 'em when we went in to eat. Boxing the grinder the next day we remembered the parts to clean and pack. Bags were gone and grinder bits too. Luckily the Mrs posted that the metal wasn't part of the deal and got 'em back. No more telling anyone where to 'come and get it'. :duh:

Around here the rule is to place unwanted stuff next to the road and put a "no trespassing" sign next to it...sure beats paying to get rid of it. Lived in a relatively affluent county in NY (not far from the Clintons)..."big pick-up day" was early Thursday morning...the trucks were prowling Wed night (actually surprised nobody got killed fighting over the stuff).

Oh yeah... They will grab free stuff quicker than crap, but try to sell something, and suddenly the communication is spotty, excuses are common, and then there the no-shows...

A guy at work cleaned out his garage and loaded on a 5x8' trailer put a free
sign on it and they unloaded the trailer and took it.
