Had a customer renting some of my equipment. Called and said someone stole the battery, battery box and cables. Thief also cut every aluminum fitting out of the hoses laid out for some drainage from a ditch. Customer found a set of bolt cutters, and saw lawn mower tracks running up to the equipment. Figured it was someone from the landscaping crew that mowed the school next door.

So, about a week goes by and this bone head that ripped them off shows up there at the construction site looking for his bolt cutters :banghead: Even showed my customer right about where he left them

Sometimes a "free" sign can be helpful :

He should have known better than to mess with a South Carolina boy.

People around here take anything from the curb as well. The only item I wasn't able to get rid of was an old ratty Lazy-Boy recliner. I've put out old non working flourscent lights, burned out vacuums, concrete blocks, heck we have even had our garbage cans vanish... with the garbage in them. amazing.

I do pretty good with CL selling hay. I've built up a pretty good repeat business from it. I've got some bargains too. Bought a nice lawnmower from a CL advertiser last year.

Used to be if it was nailed down, it would be left alone. Around me, that does not apply to barn wood. Low life's will find a barn in a quiet area and start with a back wall. I heard about one where they even burned scrap in a fifty gallion drum apparently to warm their hands.

Screwed down does not mean much either. My HVAC guy had a bunch of tools stolen from their polebarn warehouse. The perp's unscrewed a panel and had their way.

Curbside freebies, lol! I had bought a house from an elderly woman who asked me if I wanted her old sofa and easy chair. Seeing as how her dog had frequented them, I politely declined so she called the trash pickup to dispose of them. She did ask me to take them down to the road for pickup which I was glad to do for her. When a friend and I hauled them out, we found enough dog hair under the cushions to knit a sweater. Not to mention that they did have a bit of a doggy smell. Anyway, come trash day, they were already long gone, lol!

Then there was one place I had where an ice storm had destroyed my Bradford Pear tree. I hauled the brush to the township dump off but left the wood on the curb with a free sign. For a Bradford, this one had gotten pretty big so there was plenty of (junk) fire wood. Guy pulls up in a big Oldsmobile ragtop. I suggested that I would hold the wood for him to make two trips but he apparently did not want to chance losing out. He loaded the trunk, the bag seat and the front passenger seat. He got it all but his bumper was all of about two inches off the pavement, lol!

Years ago, we used to have folks run off with anything placed by the curb. If it turned out to be junk, they would bring it back!!!

I sometimes wonder (I'm a sick minded person) that is I gift wrapped my cat litter and left it on a bench somewhere, if some dishonest person would take it thinking they had gotten a 'freebie"....

I may try it someday.

I recently tore down an old concrete block building on some property I have. Didn't feel like hauling loads of concrete blocks off or renting a roll off dumpster to throw them in, so I did something really stupid.....I put a free add on Craigslist. Boy was that a mistake! Phone constantly rang off the hook but I finally got all of them gone, I'll never do that again though!

Anyways I had an old old burn barrel on the property. Like 30 years old. I used it to burn trash in sometimes, nothing major just small stuff. I noticed it was gone after I had a guy contact me about the bricks. Funny because it was just there the day before and has been on the property for 2 years without problem. I had no absolute proof he stole it but I had a suspicion. So I text him "hey I found a $100 bill on the ground and thought it was yours, maybe you dropped it?" He relied back "yeah! I'll come get it right now!" He pulls up and I noticed on the back of his truck there sits my burn barrel. He says something about the $100 and I said "who told you to remove the burn barrel?"(it also had some trash in it that he dumped out on the ground before stealing it). He tried to tell me it was his and he had it a long time, too bad I just so happen to have a pic on my phone proving it was mine.

Long story short, I told him to unload all of the bricks he got as well as the barrel or else I'm calling the cops for him trespassing right now.

Never mess with craigslist, it's too shady.

And now he knows where you live...

I sold a welder on CL - met the buyer in a WallyWorld parking lot on a busy day.

Never say free for anything on Craig's List. Always ask for money. By asking for money, even a little money, it is like hitting the ball further down the fairway: you meet a whole new class of people.
