Perils of retirement

There are provisions for hardship and modest income but limited... I would not qualify and the should downsize... or so I have been told...

Pretty Lame. Guess they don't want retirees moving there and spending money.

Retirees don't keep an area tax base solvent. Takes productivity to do that. That's not us.

Guess I will just bloom and die where I have been planted!

It does here, we have property tax and sales tax. No income tax. I am not retired yet but my property tax is over $13K a year and of course sales tax on top of that. That property tax will not go down when I retire. Sales tax will go down slightly. So I think in retirement I will keep the tax man well heeled :D

^^^ This is exactly my fear in retirement... if my property tax is over a $1000 a month now on a home I have rented for $1800... there is danger ahead... especially when I was $6800 based on what I paid for the place.

I love Washington but property tax unpredictability keeps me up at night.

No income tax is great for the Bill Gates and Costco guys... but what does it really mean to those on a modest retirement?

I think Washington is only 4 or 5% less expensive than California last I looked but California does offer some protection regarding Property Tax.

What services are you receiving for all these taxes you are paying? I think I would rent a modest place before I would buy and pay that much property tax. Do they tax your vehicles and toys too?

I have been fortunate enough that I don’t have to worry about the taxes in retirement. I crab, clam, fish off my property, I grow oysters, I have land to cut firewood, grow a garden. I launch my boat into salt water off of my own ramp. Couldn’t get me out of here with dynamite.

No one should move here. It rains all the time and taxes will kill you.

I had bought with the plan for moving... the company where I worked was being sold and we all had to reapply for our jobs... then the sale fell through due to a court injunction and my job was secure... but I had just bought a home... so I rented it out... no toys in Washington... I do have 17 gorgeous acres but down-zoning means I have lost the two additional building sites since I bought...

I have a salmon stream and salt water... my "Dock" is totally dependent on the tide... the landscape is dynamic in that it is always changing... parts of the property look like the HOH rain forest with ferns coming out of the trees... peaceful and tranquil.

Yea....I agree......nobody should move here......terrible place. I have elk walking on my grass.....have to drive 15 minutes to get my kayak on a river.....hunt off the back of my property.......have to clean limits of razor clams myself........and it rains ALL the time........really.....terrible place. I should also add.......we do most of our shopping in Oregon......about 45 miles away........they don't have sales tax but do have several micro breweries .......I feel really guilty.
