Pesty Groundhogs

You referring to a Jack Russel terrier ??? If it is and its as small as I am thinking a groundhog could work one over pretty good. I have seen a Yellow Black mouth Cur or a Norwegian Elkhound take a groundhog down quick,but I have seen a groundhog and a 50 lb dog fight until they were both so tired they could not get up.
I know those Jack Russels are tough little dogs going after rats and smaller prey....but maybe others have seen different...

Never heard them called "whistle-pigs" before you did, but just this week, heard that whistle for the first time. Found a family of them had moved in behind my barn, fortuneately about 40 yards from the window in the back of my barn. Shot two of the little varmints and then the "ma" started in on that whistling, apparently calling the little buggers back. Needless to say, they didn't respond. Then she came out a-looking. She didn't whistle much longer. Upon inspection I found they had taken what was once a small little rabbit burrow and turned into a huge, 4-entrance hole home with several mounds of dirt. Unfortuneately, looks like maybe one additional little buggers is still with us as although I filled in the holes, one was reopened this morning.

There is a rat poison which, once eaten makes the critter very thirsty ...they'll go for water. We had a squirrel in our attic and used the rat poison to get em out. Worked on the first try. Sounds like that might be a solution for your situation also.

Just stuff the dead ones back in the holes and cover. Beats having your dog eat or roll in 'em.

I guess you've never seen a Jack Russel in action. When my Dad's was 6 weeks old, Dad took him for a walk. He unsnapped his lead cause the dog was pullin' too hard and chokin' himself. The dog jumped in the honey suckle and drug out a full grown cotton tail. When he was half grown weren't no groundhog stood a chance. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

About the size of a 13" beagle. The best hog dog I ever saw was my Granddads Scotch Terror. He was technically my dog, but when we moved to town he stayed on the farm.

Oh yeah! We had a Scottish Terrier (and terror is not a misnomer to it's foes) in a fenced yard when we lived in a suburban development. Two other dogs.....a chow cross and a German Shepherd...used to run the neighborhood. I asked the chow owner, who lived a couple houses down, to keep him up....he would jump our 4' fence, do his business in our yard to mark territory, and leave. When we let our dog out he'd go nuts.
Well---one day I heard a terrible racket outside, and when I got to the back yard, I saw my Scottie lying underneath the chow, with blood all over. Turns out the chow was nearly disembowled, while the Scottie had a few chunks missing here and there. Scottie came back from the vet with stitches, chow never made it. Vet told us a Scottie will go under a larger dog and go on it's back to attack the other dog's abdomen/chest.
At some point downthe road we hard a racket again and this time the SHepherd was trying to get out of the yard with the Scottie hanging on to one ear--he eventually shook the Scottie, made it over the fence, and we never saw him in our yard again.
