Still looking since thats half the fun!
Most of us here own pets. What do you guys use for flea and tick control on your pet. Im using Frontline but pricey at $50 for a 6 month supply.
The cat is using something called revoulution. I dont know how much it cost but it is proably exspensive also. My wife has been doing all the pet stuff so I just found out how much this stuff cost me a month x 4 pets equal big money.

I want to something to use that is close to the quality that the frontline is but at a reduced price.

thanks

We recently took our dogs to "Paws for a Cause". A Humane Society "Dog-A-Thon" held in Louisville. The #1 reason for having it was to get as many dogs as possible "micro-chipped" to help identify lost dogs. There were several vets, dog product reps, and general pet care vendors there. One was a vet that offered examples of test data on flea control. She made a compelling case for the Frontline product. Most flea products merely repell fleas. Should one get on your dog, the "repellant" may make that flea bail out once the dog is in the house.... Then you can get a flea infestation in your home.

The Frontline product supposedly KILLS fleas.

In my humble opinion, the only good flea is a dead flea.

And my wifes "baby" only gets the best...... (and I;'m not talking about ME /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)

I use garlic pills, yes garlic since I do not like putting chemiclas on my dogs with a new born around.

Last year 1 tick on 3 dogs is not to bad. Only bad part is garlic breath BIG TIME on the dogs.

I'm with Indy. Our cats get Frontline'd the first of every month. Our woods are lousy with ticks, and in the extremely rare case that I find one on the cats, it is dead and usually not attached. Pricey? Yes. Effective? Yes. I feel your pain with 4 dogs plus cat(s), but I don't think you'll beat Frontline.

Springtime appears to be the critical season for us with our six goldens and three mean cats. So we Frontline them ONCE as the weather warms to nuke that first hatching in the bud, then use a garlic and yeast supplement in their food. An added benefit of the garlic is it is impossible for them to lie about not being fed! One wiff of garlic breath and you know the family has already eaten! Pete

I went for years without any topical flea/tick preventative, but I admit I dosed my three yesterday and will get the cat today. I know the neighbor's dog always has fleas and I see a lot in my business anyway, but those dogs are given a bath and a Capstar tablet. Capstar is pretty cool because it starts working to kill fleas in 30 minutes, is totally out of the dog's system in 24 hours and can be given even though the pet might have other flea products on them. It works in the blood, not the oils of the skin.

I use Frontline Plus, but some dogs have shown a reaction to it (like they could to anything, really) and need Advantage or something else. I had heard the Advantage doesn't hold up as well if your dog goes swimming a lot or otherwise gets wet. FWIW.

One way you might save, but keep your pets on something specifically designed for them is to see how long your product lasts against fleas as opposed to ticks. Most people dose every 30 days, but at least on FL+, that is only necessary if the pet is heavily infested or in a high tick area. Otherwise it can be applied every 90 days. Just read the box. (Now if only I would read my tractor's owner's manuals as closely /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

Also, and you can do this of your own accord.... if you have smaller dogs than the largest dose, you can split doses. Buy the dose in the range that is double the weight of both your dogs (for example) and apply half to each. I know many people that do this. I can't because my smallest is 77 lbs or I would.

I have also heard that some people use Avon Skin So Soft (not the cologne, the oil) and it works well at repelling even flies. Others swear by garlic pills.

Just my 2 bucks worth

We sell Frontline Plus in the store and there has never been a complaint about how well the product works. We have dropped the regular Frontline since we did receive complaints about that product not working as well. Advantage is also a good product and it is the only one that can be used on dogs of less than 11 pounds. It is also a more expensive product than the Frontline Plus. My only complaint is that since the product is imported from France the cost is always fluctuating based on the value of the $$$$$ to the Euro. Our cost has already gone up a $1.00 per package since we purchased our initial season order in February.

I called the supplier where I buy FL+ from a while ago and was told that the smallest dose,11-22 lbs, can be given to dogs lighter than 11 lbs. Merial is currently in the process of getting the package labeling changed and the formula/amount will remain the same. This requires FDA approval (of course), so who knows how long until the change goes through...

Frontline is the best.. You can save some money by taking 5 drops or 1/2 cc of the dogs dose and using that amount on the cat......This works say if you have Collie sized dog and an average sized cat..... The dog doses are in weight increments so if you are at the low or middle of that brackett use 1/2 cc on the cat......If you have multiple cats divide a large dog size. 1/2 cc is the correct dose.... I use rubber gloves and a small syringe when I handle this stuff.... Garlic won't really protect your pets......If it would then science would prove it... Frontline works period...........
