pkav32 said:Thanks for your input guys. I am putting in a 4 ft high post and rail fence ( 6" posts). I think that I would like to get a phd, but the thought of getting it stuck in the ground seems to be very frustrating. I also find it frustrating when I bought the tractor for these jobs, and I am told to rent. I will have a tough time explaining it to my wife why we just spent 16K and still rented equiptment. I do hope that building my house on a christmas tree farm will mean that it is pretty good soil. The more opinions the better. Thanks again guys.
Now this might not work for you, although I don't know why not, but while you are using a phd raise the auger up about 6" every 6" it digs down after it is down about 12". Does this make sense? Anyway do this until you have reached the depth that you want. I do this often and like some of the other posters, have never had an auger stuck.
One other thing, a lot of guys have good luck with the inexpensive phds, but you do get what you pay for and if you want as few problems as possible spend the $$$$ for a better phd and auger.
Just my experience, hope that it helps you.
