If it was a foot deep, you're one of the lucky ones /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Lucky is relative. I attempted to locate the phone line before excavation began to prevent problems. After digging a 8" deep trench (in our hard Georgia clay) 2 feet on either side of the marked line, I gave up. I was expecting it to be about 6" or less. The pool contractor actually found the line with his FEL without cutting it. It was during some back-filling work that the line was actually violated.

One day we were doing a "Spring Cleanup" at some apartments. We were installing timbers at a turn in a tiny stream to stop erosion, so there was a backhoe on site to handle some digging and stone placement. One of the guys asked if it would be a good idea to have the operator make a pass through the stream bed to tidy it up a bit. Bad idea. There was a phone line that crossed the stream and it wasn't even buried. The stream came under the road onto the property through a small concrete box culvert. The cable crossed the stream about two feet away from the box culvert, and was actually several inches higher than the invert of the culvert. It had been hidden by dead leaves and muck. The phone company wasn't amused about having this happen on Memorial Day weekend.............chim

Hey, Thanks for all the input. I finially decided to call the Phone Company to do a repair. With all the high tech toys coming out that feed through the phone line, I felt I better do a good repair. Made a call to Quest and was able to report the damage on a computerized help line and made the report without talking to a real person. I left Quest my cell number because there is no access to the phone box due to it is in the garage and I had to work today. No call from the Phone Co. I came home from work and found the repair was completed. I thought that was pretty good service. I'll probable think differntly when I get the bill.

Check out the repair photo.
Again thanks for your help.

It's been my experience that the billing depends a lot on the disgression of the repair person. They can justify to bill or not to bill upon the circumstances they see. If they find they're dealing with a jerk they can see it's a one sided affair and just who's gonna get who.

But on the other hand if they feel it was the company's fault for one reason or another they can write it off as not the contractor or homeowner's fault.

So be nice. Offer cold drinks, nonalcoholic of course, be understanding, it's a bear having a job where you're not really appreciated by a bunch of jerks who know absolutely nothing about anything. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I've always said that I can tolerate an a$$hole if he happens to be really good at what he does, or what I need him for .... and I can tolerate stupid people to a degree because they really can't help it .... but I always have a hard time tolerating stupid a$$holes because there's just no excuse for them.

This approach actually works great. When the guys were out building my barn and outside, I brought out oj and donuts every morning I was around, and some sodas during the day.. All in all it only cost me about 10-15 bucks extra.. but you wouldn't believe the little extras I got on my barn and garage!
