Photo Sensor problem with "Royal" paper shredder

Good answer, I was reluctant to recommend your solution for the same reasons you stated. I am hoping he'll find no voltage and then send him looking for a fuse.

I figure it this way - the shredder doesn't work as it is, so anything I do to get it working is a step closer than I am now. If I disable an 'auto' feature in the process, so be it. I am perfectly comfortable turning the unit on only when needed.

That said, the thought that it is the logic board seems unlikely to me, despite the unbelievably low failure rate of LED's and their like. This sense is primarily due to the fact that the machine worked in the 'limp-along' mode with the aluminum foil used a reflective agent for so long. Is there a possibility that the logic board is not sending adequate voltage to properly illuminate the 'sender'?

I consider myself to be pretty handy, but electronics repair has always been a shortfall in my technical knowledge. Oh well, I'll check the voltage and report back. Thanks guys!

If you don't find any voltage, look for a fuse. You are only going to find about 1.2 volts. The logic stuff behind the receiver is not worth the effort. It only drives the relay. The relay is the final solution, I won't recommend it because of the obvious liabilities. Your house and family are more valuble than a shredder. Hope we helped...

Here is a link to your photo-diode , phototransister , photo-resister(cad-cell) circuits. in your case, the lack of light(infared or visible) is the trigger to start the motor. As the circuit diagram shows, the relay is what runs the motor, everything before it is just a complicated switch. For giggles, unplug it, point the lights at each other, plug it back in, put the cover back on to shield the sensor from ambient light, and put some paper in... (break the beam.) Your foil comment makes me think of an alignment problem. The shredder may have a safety feature that disables it in case of a fault. Hey... can't hurt...

the photo sensor in mine quit.

i hot wired it to run all the time if the switch was on.

i turn it on, run paper through, turn it off

but... that was then. now everything that i used to shred is added to the burnable trash bin and gets burnt every few days.

no shredder to deal with anymore ;) (although the chickens would like the shredings)
