I figure it this way - the shredder doesn't work as it is, so anything I do to get it working is a step closer than I am now. If I disable an 'auto' feature in the process, so be it. I am perfectly comfortable turning the unit on only when needed.
That said, the thought that it is the logic board seems unlikely to me, despite the unbelievably low failure rate of LED's and their like. This sense is primarily due to the fact that the machine worked in the 'limp-along' mode with the aluminum foil used a reflective agent for so long. Is there a possibility that the logic board is not sending adequate voltage to properly illuminate the 'sender'?
I consider myself to be pretty handy, but electronics repair has always been a shortfall in my technical knowledge. Oh well, I'll check the voltage and report back. Thanks guys!
