Any coop pics you guys wood like to share? I saw one today, which was basically a walk in shed style with nesting boxes and roosts on the inside.

One of the chicks we named "Fiesty" flapped her wings and hopped up onto my hand today. She then made herself comfortable and didn't want to be put down. Too funny.

It might be a good idea to clip their flight feathers.

Happy Gilmore,
I looked at many coop designs and then free lanced mine. I never did put pen to paper for the design, just ran it through my head.

Out of all the chicks, Fiesty is the only one who continuously hops up onto to my hand to use it as a perch. She hates getting down, it's kinda cool. At what age would you clip flight feathers? Is it something you need to do? If they are going to be free range during the daytime prior to going into the coop at night should it still be done?

I definately need to do some more coop research.

Chickens can fly, not very good or for long, but they can fly. I would do it at 4 months.
back yard chickens.com is where I got a fair amount of my info.

I put a 3/4" wooden dowel through the crate (temporary coop) today. I was thinking maybe since Feisty likes roosting on my hand, maybe she'll roost up there, it's about 12" off the bottom tray. We'll see I guess.

The roost is working out ok, and guess who's perched up there? Just as I figured, Feisty.

If you want to go free range and still keep the varmits from enjoying your birds, google Chicken Tractors. When they clean up one patch of grass you just roll coop and run to a fresh spot.

Are there any prey animals that will bother them in the daytime when free ranging?

I'm confused, what happened? Did all but one live? Were they all wet?

That probably depends on where you live... I lost 5 hens in broad daylight to weasels last year this time... 3 were locked up in the coop.

The trouble is that once an animal discovers them it'll keep coming back for easy pickings.

Having said that I've had free ranging hens for the last four years without losing any while they were out except the above mentioned.
They're a lot of fun, but the only way I could recover my money by selling eggs would be to find the one which lays the golden egg! ;)\

Here is my temporary "in the house coop" until the chicks get bigger and the outside temps get warmer.

They've been a blast so far, my children enjoy them. I always thought about getting chickens, just never did. Now I find myself hanging out with the little buggers throughout the day. Have fun with yours, aren't they entertaining.

Plus or minus a couple we have most of them.

We don't have any mountain lions or possums. But we do have the rest. For pest control I use the SSS method.
