Pickups the new Luxury Car?

The only way I've ever been able to justify a lease is if it's a business lease. And even then they're hard to justify. If you think your needs will be different in 3 years then they make sense otherwise they really don't.

Pickup trucks have long been the "next luxury car" in my neck of the woods. Even the girls are now buying PU trucks rather than cars and everyone wants full luxury items on them. When you can get 4 doors in a truck (5-6 passengers) and still have a 5.5' bed for hauling, a car seems awfully foolish to own. I still cant get over todays pricing (my truck is a 2007 with 50K miles) and don't think I will be buying a new one in my life time, but lots of folks are which is holding the pricing up.

If you buy a $60,000 vehicle on credit, after six years/210,000 miles your resale will be $10,000, maybe. So depreciation is $50,000 or $8,333 per year PLUS your interest cost.

Survival is one issue. Working until you die, because you cannot afford to retire, is another.
Man you drive a lot of miles per year (35,000) way more than average folks do especially retired folks like myself. Even before retirement I never drove that much. Our 2003 just turned over 100K last year (7500 avg per year), my 2007 has 50K (5000 avg) and our 2013 (5000 avg) has just a bit over 10K. So my avg is 17,500 per year and with exception of the 2013, most of the mileage was pre-retirement miles. I think average mileage basis now is 20K per year, up from the 12K avg from days gone by.

I don't buy new just to have a fresh face in the garage. If dealerships relied on me for sales, then they would all go belly up.

For a lot of years, we had a car (or SUV) and a pickup, but as a couple of old folks, we almost NEVER used both at the same time; i.e., me going one place while she was going another. So we decided that one vehicle might be more sensible. Now I'd hate to go get a can of gas for the lawnmower or string trimmer and have that odor in the car. I also have a rollator. My physical condition isn't bad enough to NEED one, but I LIKE it. So I wanted enough room for those things. And as you said, our F150 4 door, 5.5' bed, with an A.R.E. cab high topper is great; don't smell the gas in the passenger compartment when I buy a can of gas, can take my rollator and such without even folding it up, lots of head room and lots of leg room.

If you think that's alot we on average put 75,000 or so miles a year. Can't justify a new truck, but we will need nicer ones so our budget is high $40,000 but ate looking at new dodge eco diesel

I'm at the other end of the scale... 1985 with 180k or 500 miles per month... it is a mobile workshop... most of my work is within a few miles from home.

Leases are a mistake.

You are mistaken. We buy many vehicles and about 2/3 are leased first.

Let's take my current daily driver. 2012 F150 Supercrew FX4 4X4. Sticker was 40K plus.

24 month lease no money down was $400 per month, 15,000 miles per year. So that math is $9600

I bought the truck at the end for $24,500. That puts the total price at $34,100.

Go ahead and walk in off the street and buy a $40,000 truck for $34,000. It can be done but with a lease if it's a lemon you walk away at 24 months.

No financial advisor will tell you to get a lease. If you think it works out there is a problem with your math or numbers.

Sharp truck - Fordman1981
Yes they still offer the manual transmission but only with the diesel. The 4500 and up the manual is rated to tow and haul more than the auto. It hasn't been that way for a while and it's nice to see that again. I would have loved to have got a manual in my last new truck but DEF will keep me from buying any more diesels until the come up with a better solution.
