Although it doesn't apply across the board for every species, there's a phenomenon called "Bergman's Rule" that basically says that the colder the climate, the larger the animal...presumably the larger size reduces the surface area to mass ratio, and thus helps to conserve heat. It would seem to work for deer; the Key deer are pretty small, and I know deer get larger the farther North you go.
